Preparing Vulnerable Environments for Hands-on Cybersecurity Training

Abstract:

Príprava zraniteľných prostredí pre školenia o kybernetickej bezpečnosti je zdĺhavý proces. Okrem toho nie všetky zraniteľnosti sa dajú použiť a identifikácia použiteľných zraniteľností je s rastúcim počtom zverejnených zraniteľností čoraz náročnejšia. Táto práca analyzuje dostupné zdroje používané pri príprave prostredia a ponúka riešenie, ktoré dokáže automatizovať zber informácií o zraniteľnosti a v prípade niektorých zraniteľností aj priamo pripraviť zraniteľné prostredia. Navrhované riešenie bolo vyhodnotené na najčastejšie zneužívaných zraniteľnostiach z roku 2021. Výsledky ukázali, že schopnosť riešenia pripraviť zraniteľné prostredie je veľmi obmedzená dostupnými zdrojmi. Napriek tomu riešenie zozbieralo dostatok údajov o zraniteľnostiach na posúdenie príčin zlyhaní. Riešenie je preto možno využiť na pomoc pri príprave školení o kybernetickej bezpečnosti.

Abstract:

Preparing vulnerable environments for cybersecurity training is a lengthy process. Furthermore, not all vulnerabilities can be used in cybersecurity training, and identifying usable vulnerabilities becomes more difficult with a growing number of published vulnerabilities. This thesis analyses available resources used during the environment preparation and offers a solution that can automate the collection of information for the vulnerability and, for some vulnerabilities, also prepare the environments directly. The proposed solution was evaluated on the top routinely exploited vulnerabilities from 2021. The results indicated that the capabilities of the solution to prepare the vulnerable environment are very limited by available resources. Still, the solution collected enough data about the vulnerabilities to assess the reason behind failures. Therefore the solution can be used to help with cybersecurity training preparation.
