Spectator in the spotlight: audience development in contemporary dance in selected performing arts organizations

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the audience development in a context of activities of selected performing arts organisations based in Prague. The aim of the thesis is to track attitudes and activities which are undertaken by these organisations in order to attract, retain and broaden audiences either in qualitative or in a quantitative way. In the theoretical part, the paper discusses various perspectives of audience development and related issues of cultural participation and access to culture. The qualitative research examines audience development activities in performing arts organisations presenting artworks of contemporary dance, physical theatre and new circus. Within the area of a particular project, it tracks used methods and compares the results with the perspectives of the audiences and participants. Based on the results, the work leads to conclusions and recommendations that can contribute to strategic use of the ideas and possibilities of the audience development in concerned organisations.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá prácou s publikom v kontexte činností vybraných kultúrnych organizácií pôsobiacich v oblasti pohybového a tanečného umenia v Prahe. Cieľom práce je zmapovať prístupy a aktivity, ktoré vybraným kultúrnym organizáciám slúžia k získavaniu, udržiavaniu a rozširovaniu publika v kvalitatívnom a kvantitatívnom zmysle. V teoretickej časti práca mapuje rôzne pohľady na koncept práce s publikom a s ním súvisiace otázky kultúrnej participácie a umožňovania prístupu ku kultúre. V praktickej časti práca na základe kvalitatívneho výskumu, skúma rôzne polohy práce s publikom v prostredí vybraných pražských organizácií, ktoré prezentujú diela súčasného tanca, fyzického divadla a nového cirkusu. Na príklade konkrétneho projektu sleduje použité prístupy a porovnáva ich s názormi divákov a participantov. Na základe výsledkov výskumu, práca vyvodzuje závery a odporúčania pre strategické využitie ideí a možností práce s publikom v daných organizáciách.
