Audio Documentary as Reflected by the International Feature Conference: The Evolution of the International Audio Community through Competitive and Non-competitive Exhibitions

Abstract:

Disertační práce „Audio dokumentaristika v zrcadle International Feature Conference: Rozvoj mezinárodní audio komunity v kontextu soutěžních i nesoutěžních přehlídek“ pojednává o International Feature Conference (IFC), každoročním pracovním setkání rozhlasových tvůrců z celého světa. Část této práce poskytuje vhled do dějin rozhlasové dokumentaristiky a mapuje, jak se audio komunita (primárně evropská) proměnila za 45 let existence IFC, nakolik vznik IFC ovlivnil její směřování a s jakými problémy se žánr rozhlasového dokumentu / featuru musel za ta léta vyrovnat. Kromě zaměření na IFC obsahuje tato práce také podrobnou reflexi dalších významných akcí odehrávajících se na poli audia, které jsou následně komparovány s IFC. Konkrétně se jedná o přehlídky Prix Europa, Prix Italia, Third Coast International Audio Festival a HearSay Audio Arts Festival.

Abstract:

The thesis “Audio Documentary as Reflected by the International Feature Conference: The Evolution of the International Audio Community through Competitive and Non-competitive Exhibitions” deals with the main focus points of the International Feature Conference (IFC) – the annual gathering of radio content creators from all over the globe. The thesis delves into the history of radio documentary and examines the changes that happened to the primarily European community in the 45 years of the IFC’s existence, the impact of the IFC’s birth on later direction of radio documentary and the issues that radio documentary/feature had to overcome to become what it is known as today. The thesis then continues with an elaborate reflection on other significant events in the radio documentary field, which are compared with the IFC to pinpoint notable differences and similarities. The events are listed as follows: Prix Europa, Prix Italia, the Third Coast International Audio Festival and the HearSay Audio Arts Festival.
