The impact of the credit unions' sector on the financial stability of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

V posledních letech je téma družstevních záložen hojně diskutované, přičemž jsou považovány za rizikovější než bankovní sektor. Tato bakalářská práce analyzuje současnou situaci v sektoru družstevních záložen, identifikuje zdroje nynějších problémů a pokouší se vyvodit, zda by zvýšená rizikovost sektoru mohla mít negativní důsledky pro finanční stabilitu celého finančního sektoru. Analýza ukazuje, že dnešní družstevní záložny se odchylují od původních principů, na kterých je družstevní peněžnictví založeno, a svým chováním se spíše blíží bankám, ačkoliv jsou na ně kladeny nižší požadavky, především ve výši minimálního požadovaného kapitálu. Sektor družstevních záložen tvoří nepatrný segment finančního trhu, přesto by však dlouhotrvající problémy družstevních záložen mohly mít negativní dopady na finanční stabilitu.

Abstract:

The topic of credit unions has been highly discussed over the last years and they are considered to be more hazardous than bank sector. This bachelor thesis analyses the present situation of the credit unions' sector, identifies the sources of the current problems and tries to deduce whether the increased high-risk activities could have a negative impact on the financial stability of the whole financial market. The analysis shows that the contemporary credit unions deflect from the original principles, on which cooperative banking is based. By their behaviour the credit unions approximate to banks even though lower requirements are placed on them, mainly in the amount of the minimal capital requirement. The credit unions' sector comprises an infinitesimal segment of the financial market, nevertheless the long-term credit unions' problems might have a negative impact on the financial stability.
