Basic Terms and Approaches in Utilitarianism

Abstract:

Tématem bakalářské práce jsou základní pojmy a přístupy ve filozofickém směru s názvem utilitarismus. V první části se bakalářská práce zabývá jeho třemi hlavními představiteli, kterými jsou Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill a Henry Sidgwick. U každého z nich seznamuje s životem, hlavními myšlenkami a klíčovými teoriemi pojícími se s utilitarismem. V druhé části rozebírá proudy utilitaristického myšlení. Dělí utilitarismus podle dvou hledisek: z hlediska principu jednání a hlediska užitečnosti. Tím zároveň představuje hédonistický utilitarismus, preferenční utilitarismus a utilitarismus činu a pravidla. Přibližuje jejich teorie nejenom na základě definic, ale i na příkladech z praxe. Dále se zabývá kritikou utilitarismu. Definuje pět hlavních námitek a vysvětluje obhajobu utilitaristů vůči těmto námitkám. Na závěr shrnuje klady a zápory tohoto přístupu jako celku, ale také jednotlivých teorií a myšlenek hlavních představitelů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the basic concepts and approaches in the philosophical direction called utilitarianism. The first part introduces the three main leaders of utilitarianism that are Jeremy Bentham, John Stuart Mill and Henry Sidgwick. The thesis informs us about their lives, main ideas and key theories which are connected with utilitarianism. The second part analyzes the currents of this philosophical direction. It divides the utilitarianism according to two aspects: the principle of action and aspect of usefulness. These two aspects represent preference utilitarianism, hedonistic utilitarianism, act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism. The thesis explains their theories not only on the basis of the definitions, but also on the basis of examples. It also defines five main objections and explains utilitarian defense against these objections. The conclusion summarizes the pros and cons of this approach as a whole, of in-dividual theories and ideas of the main protagonists.
