The physics and the geometry of photometric spots on rotating variable stars

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the study of photometric variability of geometrically variable stars, especially the group of chemically peculiar stars. One of the main characteristics of this category is the special distribution of energy within the spots with overabundant chemical elements redirecting the flux from UV region to higher wavelengths. In the first part I developed the technique of creating the simulated light curves of stars with surface spots as a result of rotation. Subsequently I confirmed the suitability of previously chosen model function using the results of simulations and applied it to the light curves of 83 stars in 5 filters. It was proved that simulated light curves were in a great accordance with those observed. The main outcome of this research is the classification of chemically peculiar stars based on the type of energy distribution derived from the amplitudes of light changes in different filters. There seem to be two basic types found, one of them have been already studied and explained, one is waiting to be physically described and explained.

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřená na studium fotometrické variability geometricky proměnných hvězd, konkrétně na skupinu chemicky pekuliárních hvězd. Jedna z hlavních charakteristik této kategorie je speciální rozdělení energie v oblasti skvrn s nadměrným zastoupením chemických prvků transportujících tok záření z UV oblasti do vyšší vlnových délek. V prvé části jsem vyvinul techniku vytváření simulovaných světelných křivek hvězd s povrchovými skvrnami podmíněné rotací. Následně jsem potvrdil vhodnost používané modelové funkce použitím výsledků simulací a aplikoval jsem ji na světelné křivky 83 hvězd v 5 filtrech. Byla dokázána shoda simulovaných světelných křivek s křivkami pozorovanými. Hlavním výstupem tohoto výzkumu je klasifikace chemicky pekuliárních hvězd založená na type rozdělení energie odvozeného z amplitud světelných změn v různých filtrech. Ukazuje se, že existují dva hlavní typy, jeden již popsán a vysvětlen, druhý čekající na podrobnější prostudování.
