Crime and media discourse in contemporary South Africa

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na kriminalitu v Jihoafrické republice a způsoby reportování vybraných zpravodajských médií o této problematice. Cílem bakalářské práce je popsat přístupy jednotlivých jihoafrických médií ke kriminalitě a analyzovat interpretaci příčin vysoké kriminality. V první části je krátká literární rešerše, která se zaměřuje především na vztah médií ke kriminalitě a způsoby reportování. Dále je v bakalářské práci také teoretická část, ve které je popsán sociální konstruktivismus a teorie framingu neboli rámování. Prostřednictvím těchto teorií je možné lépe pochopit důležitost utvářených diskurzů. K vypracování výzkumné části byla použita metoda diskurzivní analýzy, pomocí které byly nalezeny jednotlivé diskurzy o kriminalitě a jejich příčinách. Předmětem analýzy jsou mediální společnosti GroundUp, TimesLIVE, News24 a SowetanLIVE, a to v období od 1.1.2020 do 31.3.2024, s výjimkou News24, kde byly články dostupné pouze do 5.8.2022. V publikovaných článcích byly nalezeny dominantní diskurzy o kriminalitě objevující se napříč mediálními společnostmi, a to: nedostatečná policejní práce, policejní brutalita, kriminalita spojována s cizími státními příslušníky a vysoká kriminalita ve školách. V sesbíraných článcích byly nalezeny také minoritní diskurzy, jako například kriminalita spojená s dostupností drog a alkoholu nebo vysoké násilí ve městech.

Abstract:

The bacherol thesis focuses on crime in the Republic of South Africa and the ways in which selected news media report on this issue. The aim of the bachelor thesis is to describe the approaches of the various South African media to crime and to analyse the interpretation of the causes of high crime. In the first part is a short literature search, which focuses mainly on the media's relationship to crime and reporting methods. There is also a theoretical section in the thesis, which describes social constructivism and framing theory. Through these theories it is possible to better understand the importance of framed discourses. To develop the research part, the method of discourse analysis was used to find the different discourses about crime and their causes. The media companies GroundUp, TimesLIVE, News24 and SowetanLIVE were the subject of the analysis, and the period from 1 January 2020 to 31 March 2024, except for News24, where articles were only available until 5 August 2022. The dominant discourses on crime found in the published articles appearing across media companies were: lack of police work, police brutality, crime associated with foreign nationals and high crime in schools. Minority discourses were also found in the collected articles, such as criminality associated with the availability of drugs and alcohol or high urban violence.
