What a splendid ride it was: the rise and fall of MTV

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis thoroughly examines the evolution of the television network MTV from its inception in the 1980s to the present day. The thesis gradually focuses on the factors that led to the establishment of MTV and enabled the network to achieve a revolutionary impact on the music industry and popular culture. The introductory chapters describe the beginnings of MTV, which were based on an innovative concept of predominantly broadcasting music videos, thus pioneering the fusion of music with television. Furthermore, the thesis pays attention to the development of the network during the 1990s, when MTV underwent significant changes, as there was a shift in its broadcasting strategy, with the television network increasingly focusing on celebrity culture and reality show production. This strategic shift not only influenced the content and character of the network but also sparked discussions about MTV's identity and its original focus on music. Additionally, this bachelor thesis addresses the process of MTV's globalization, through which the television network expanded its cultural influence worldwide. Through the analysis of shifts in viewership, the emergence of a new generation, and audience preferences, the thesis evaluates the decline of MTV's cultural influence in the present day. The aim of this thesis is thus not only to describe the key moments in MTV's history but also to understand the current situation of the network. Finally, the bachelor thesis explores the symbiotic relationship between the television network and pop music legend Madonna.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce podrobně zkoumá vývoj televizní stanice MTV od jejího vzniku v 80. letech až po současnost. Práce se postupně zaměřuje na faktory, které stály za založením MTV. Tyto faktory umožnily televizní stanici dosáhnout revolučního vlivu na hudební průmysl a populární kulturu. Úvodní kapitoly popisují začátky MTV, které spočívaly v inovativním konceptu, kdy stanice vysílala převážně hudební videoklipy. Tímto se stala průkopníkem v propojení hudby s televizí. Dále práce věnuje pozornost vývoji stanice během 90. let, kdy MTV prošla řadou důležitých změn. V této době došlo k posunu ve strategii vysílání. Televizní stanice se začala více zaměřovat na kulturu celebrit a produkci reality show. Tento strategický posun ovlivnil nejen obsah a charaktér stanice, ale také vyvolal diskuzi ohledně identity MTV a jejího původnímu zaměření na hudbu. V této bakalářské práci se také věnuji procesu globalizace MTV, díky kterému televizní stanice rozšířila svůj kulturní vliv po celém světě. Prostřednictvím analýzy posunů ve sledovanosti, nástupu nové generace a preferencí publika, práce evauluje pokles kulturního vlivu MTV v současnosti. Cílem této práce je tedy nejen popsání klíčových momentů v historii MTV, ale také porozumění současné situaci této stanice. V poslední řadě se bakalářská práce zabývá symbiotickým vztahem mezi televizní stanicí a legendou popové muziky Madonnou.
