Expertise in an Online Community of Interest: An Ethnographic Study of a Czech Community of Photographers

Abstract:

Zájmové online komunity dnes představují významný zdroj vědění. Sdružují se v nich lidé, kteří mají k dispozici rozdílné zdroje, a kteří jsou ochotni sdílet s ostatními své znalosti a zkušenosti. Ovšem výhody této nabídky vědění "zdarma" jsou provázeny také obtížemi spojenými s jeho hodnocením. S online komunitami se pojí otázky důvěryhodnosti jejích členů, způsobu hodnocení kvality vědění a schopností ostatních, a také možnosti předávání tzv. implicitního vědění (tacit knowledge). Online komunity tedy vyvolávají otázky spojené s pravou identitou a motivací členů, a následně také charakteru nabízeného vědění. Ve své práci se zabývám těmito tématy v souvislosti s online komunitou sdružující fotografy. Konkrétně se zaměřuji na hodnocení kvality vědění a informací v komunitě, při zvážení specifického charakteru online prostředí. Ptám se: Jakým způsobem členové připisují expertní vědění v online komunitě? Jaká vodítka v tomto procesu používají? Jak je tento proces specifický ve vybrané komunitě? Otázky zodpovídám na základě výsledků šestitýdenní virtuální etnografické studie v online komunitě fotografů. Ve výzkumu jsem využila principy zakotvené teorie: Ve výsledku jsem identifikovala základní teoretický koncept a čtyři hlavní kategorie ilustrující průběh připisování hodnoty vědění v online komunitě. Hlavním konceptem je ukotvování informace v komunitní participaci; čtyřmi popisnými a specifikujícími kategoriemi pak jsou identifikace zdroje, místní a topická relevance, a funkční formát a komplexnost informace.

Abstract:

Online communities of interest today represent an important source of information and knowledge. They cumulate people with diverse resources, who are willing to share their knowledge and expertise. But the benefits of freely provided knowledge go hand in hand with the difficulties of its assessment. There are questions of trust, of assessing the quality of knowledge and skills of others, and also of the very possibility of transferring tacit (implicit) knowledge in an effective way while participating in an online community. Online communities thus raise many questions regarding the true identity and motivations of their members, and consequentially also the character of the knowledge they provide. I consider these issues in my study on an online community of photographers. I specifically focus on the assessment of the quality of knowledge and information in the community, considering the specific conditions of the online environment. I ask: How do members ascribe expertise in an online community of interest? Through which cues is information assessed (as valuable and trustworthy)? How is this process specific for the selected online environment? To answer my questions, I conducted a six week ethnographic study in an online community of photographers. My research followed the principles of grounded theory and resulted in identification of one core theoretical category and four categories specifying the process of assessment of expertise within the community. The main theoretical concept of anchoring information in community participation illustrates the central process of expertise ascription within online communities. This concept is explained into greater detail in categories that capture the character of information inside an online community: source identification, topical relevance, sufficient format and complexity.
