Charles IV - King of Bohemia

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce podává vyvážený výklad českých dějin za vlády Karla IV. od jejích počátků až po Karlovu smrt. Práce je rozdělena do dvou částí. První část se zabývá Lucemburskou dynastií,jejím původem a nástupem na český trůn. V této části je věnována pozornost Janu Lucemburskému a jeho vládě, dynastické politice a to nejen v českém království, ale také v říši římské. Nebyly opomenuty komplikované rodinné vztahy mezi Janem Lucemburským a Karlem IV. Druhá část pojednává již o samotném Karlu IV. Je chronologicky řazena od Karlova útlého dětství a pobytu ve Francii, udělení titulu markraběte moravského až k titulu římskoněmeckého císaře. V této části je také nastíněn vzestup České koruny v rámci tehdejší Evropy, popisována šlechtická reprezentace, dynastická a teritoriální politika Karla IV. Zmíněno je vydávání dokumentů, přesněji dva nejdůležitější - Maiestas Carolina a Zlatá bula Karla IV. Celá práce je uzavřena posledním desetiletím Karlovy vlády, jeho snahou korunovat svého syna Václava IV. římským králem, vytvořením nástupnického řádu a Karlovou poslední cestou do Francie.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is a balanced interpretation of Czech history during the reign of Charles IV., from its early beginnings to his death. The thesis is divided into two crucial parts. The first part of the thesis discusses the fates of the House of Luxembourg, its origins and accession to the bohemian throne. This part is mainly dedicated to John the Blind, his reign and dynastic politics, not only in the King dom of Bohemia, but also in the Holy Roman Empire, not neglecting the generally known, complicated family relations between him and his son, Charles IV. The second part of the thesis concentrates on Charles IV. himself. All the historici facts mentioned are in chronological order (from his early childhood and life in France to obtaining the title of Margrave of Moravia and eventually becoming the Holy Roman Emperor) to ensure a certain level of comprehension. This part also delineate the rise of value of the Czech koruna in late medieval Europe, it also describes the aristocratic representation, as well as dynastic and territorial politics of Charles IV. The issue of the Golden Bull of 1356 and the Maiestas Carolina legal code was also taken into account. In conclusion, the last decade of Charles's reign is mentioned in the final part of the thesis, along with his efforts to crown his son Wenceslaus as the Holy Roman Emperor. This part of the thesis also deals with the line of succession to the bohemian throne and Charles's last journey to France.
