The Fictional Mind of the Unreliable Narrator

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je přiblížit způsob analýzy literárních děl za pomoci kognitivních věd. Práce se také zaměřuje na vysvětlení toho, jak myšlení literárních postav rozumějí čtenáři během čtení. Metoda zkoumající čtenářské chápání mentálního fungování literárních postav, které je podle kognitivní teorie analogické k mentálnímu fungování čtenářů z reálného světa, vychází z teorie mysli. Snahou práce je vysvětlit propojení kognitivních věd s literárněvědnými teoriemi a objasnit postupy textové analýzy k rozpoznání fikčních myslí v literatuře. Postupy kognitivních věd používané naratology budou aplikovány při analýze postmoderní prózy Kniha o cintoríne, jejíž děj je konstruován vyprávěním autodiegetického vypravěče s mentálním postižením. Výrazným charakterovým rysem vypravěče románu je jeho nespolehlivost při konstruování výpovědi (částečně daná mentálním stavem vypravěče, ale především jeho neochotou vyprávět o událostech, jež se odehrály v jeho fikčním světě, nezkresleně), což přivádí čtenáře ke konstruování jiného obrazu fikčního světa než toho, který prezentuje vypravěč-postava.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis is to describe the method of analysis of literary works with the aid of cognitive sciences. The diploma thesis also focuses on describing the way, the thinking of the literary characters is understood by readers during reading. The method studying the readers’ understanding of the characters’ minds, which is analogical to the minds of the characters from the real world according to the cognitive theory, based on theory of minds. Another effort of the thesis is to explain the connection between theories of the cognitive science and the theories of literature studies, and to explain the methods of text analysis to recognize the fictional minds in literature. The methods of cognitive sciences used by narratologists will be applied in analysis of postmodern prose called Kniha o cintoríne, which story is constructed by the narration of autodiegetical narrator with mental issue. A significant character feature of the narrator is his unreliability when constructing narrative exposition (which exists partially due to the mental state of the narrator, but mainly because of his unwillingness to provide an undistorted narration about the events in his fictional world), which leads the reader to construct another image of the fictional world than the one presented by the narrator-character.
