Benchmarking of the IBM Quantum computer

Abstract:

Kvantová výpočtová technika rastie nielen ako vedný odbor, ale rovnako ako trh, pričom niektoré odhady dosiahnu do roku 2030 hodnoty 9,1 miliárd dolárov. Hlavným lákadlom kvantových počítačov je schopnosť riešiť problémy podstatne rýchlejšie ako v klasických počítačoch. Aj keď sú kvantové počítače rýchlejšie, sú vo svojej podstate pravdepodobnostné a nie deterministické; preto sa kvantové počítače používajú menej. Kvantové stavy, základ pre kvantové výpočty, sú ľahko narušiteľné prostredím alebo vnútornou nekonzistenciou kvantových brán. Toto skreslenie kvantových stavov z väčšej časti spôsobuje pokles presnosti kvantových počítačov. Táto práca porovnáva presnosť bežne dostupného kvantového počítača Ibmq-5-yorktown od spoločnosti IBM Corporation a vymedzuje možnosť použitia bežne dostupných kvantových počítačov na praktické účely. Presnosť kvantového počítača bola porovnaná s kompresným algoritmom, kvantovou Shur-Weylovou transformáciou, ktorá komprimuje tri qubity s rovnakým stavom na dva qubity a vymaže posledný qubit. Vyššie uvedený algoritmus bol teoreticky testovaný na správnosť a vyskúšaný pre množstvo stavov. Rovnaký postup sa použil pri kompresii a ďalšej dekompresii. Výsledky boli použité na prezentáciu chybovosti kvantového počítača. Na záver, výsledky preukázali výrazný nedostatok presnosti pre niektoré stavy, aj keď horná hranica vernosti ukazovala výsledky najlepším možným spôsobom.

Abstract:

Quantum computing is growing not only as the science field, but as well as the market with some estimates reaching 9.1 billion dollars in revenue by 2030. The main attraction of quantum computers is the ability to solve problems significantly faster than in classical computers. Although the quantum computers are faster, they are in nature probabilistic and not deterministic; therefore, the quantum computers are more narrowly used. Quantum states, the basis for quantum computing, are easily distorted by the environment or by internal inconsistencies of quantum gates. This distortion of the quantum states, from the most part, causes the drop in accuracy of quantum computers. This thesis benchmarks the accuracy of commonly accessible Ibmq-5-yorktown quantum computer by IBM Corporation, and concludes the possibility of using commonly available quantum computers for practical usage. Accuracy of quantum computer was benchmarked with compression algorithm, Quantum Shur-Weyl transform, which compresses three qubits with the same state into two qubits and erases last qubit. Aforementioned algorithm was theoretically tested for correctness and run for a number of the states. Same procedure was used for compression and further decompression. The results were used to showcase the error rate of a quantum computer. In conclusion, results showed a significant lack of accuracy for some states, even if the upper-bound of fidelity showcased the results in the best possible way.
