Comparison of financial remuneration by gender and its representation in Czech Television series production

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce za použití kvantitativních metod porovnává honoráře a zastoupení hlavních hereček a herců dle genderu v seriálové dramatické tvorbě České televize v letech 2017–2022. Práce reaguje na nově vznikající studie zabývající se genderovou nerovností v audiovizuálním průmyslu. Cílem práce je zjistit, zda jsou ženy a muži rovnovážně zastoupeni v hlavních rolích a zda jsou za svou práci rovnocenně ohodnoceni. V rámci teoretické části práce jsou nastíněny strategie Evropské unie, které se snaží o odstranění rozdílu mezi muži a ženami, a zahraniční studie zabývající se nerovnostmi v audiovizuálním prostředí. Výzkumná část práce následně komparuje odměňování podle genderu a jeho zastoupení na vzorku 160 hlavních hereckých rolí u 40 seriálů a minisérií domácí i zakázkové tvorby České televize ve zmíněném časovém období. Na základě tohoto šetření bylo zjištěno, že na uvedeném vzorku lze vysledovat nevyváženost mezi obsazováním mužů a žen do hlavních rolí, a že průměrný denní honorář hlavních ženských rolí je o o 8 % nižší než průměrný denní honorář hlavního mužského obsazení.

Abstract:

Using quantitative methods, the bachelor thesis compares the fees and representation of leading actresses and actors by gender in Czech television drama series from 2017 - 2022. The thesis follows emerging studies on gender inequality in the audiovisual industry. The aim of the work is to determine whether women and men are equally represented in leading roles and whether they are equally remunerated for their work. The theoretical part of the thesis outlines the European Union's strategies to close the gender gap and foreign studies on inequalities in the audiovisual environment. The research part of the thesis then compares gender remuneration and its representation in a sample of 160 leading actor roles in 40 series and miniseries of inner-house and custom-made Czech television in the time period mentioned above. This survey found that the sample shows an imbalance between the casting of men and women in leading roles and that the average daily remuneration of the female leads is 8% lower than the average daily remuneration of the male leads.
