Abstract:

Táto práca skúma základné faktory, pri ktorých dochádza k vykorisťovanie a prerozdeľovaniu zdrojov ako aj možné spôsoby, ako vykorisťovanie zastaviť. Študujem jednotlivcov, ktorí v ňom zohrávajú zásadnú úlohu, v štyroch kapitolách, ktoré zdieľajú rovnakú vedeckú metódu, ekonomický experiment. V práci sa zameriavam na kľúčových aktérov – páchateľov a tretie strany. Prvá kapitola odhaľuje možné motivácie ľudí zničiť časť majetku iných v štylizovanej hre "Money burning game", ktorú výskumníci používajú na simuláciu antisociálneho správania. Zistili sme, že účastníci sa zapájajú do zničenia peňazí iných iba vtedy, ak predpokladajú, že tak robia iní. Druhá štúdia skúma, ako sa vykorisťovanie objavuje v opakovaných situáciách s tými istými aktérmi. Možnosť, že sa bystander stane obeťou, má na ochotu zakročiť podobný vplyv ako in-group zvýhodňovanie. Toto platí aj pre páchateľov, ktorí sa snažia od obete, ktorá je im podobná vziať menej. V tretej kapitole testujeme dlhodobý predpoklad, že tresty tretích osôb vznikajú preto, lebo ľudia chcú presadzovať sociálne normy. Používame skúsenosť ako exogénny nástroj na posun empirických očakávaní a identifikujeme ich pozitívny kauzálny vplyv na rozhodnutia o treste. Vo štvrtej štúdii skúmam, ako pocit oprávnenia a samovýber ovplyvňujú konečné rozdelenie zdrojov, keď účastníci súťažia o moc. Ľudia, ktorí sa zúčastňujú súťaže, sa delia menej, aj keď do súťaže neinvestovali veľa.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the essential factors when exploitation and redistribution of resources occur and possible ways to stop both. I study exploitation and individuals that play essential roles in it in four chapters that share the same scientific method, economic experiment. I focus on crucial actors - perpetrators and third parties. The first chapter disentangles possible motivations of people to destroy part of others' endowment in a stylized money-burning game that researchers use to simulate antisocial behavior. We find that subjects engage in burning the money of others only if they suppose others to do so. The second study investigates how exploitation emerges in repeated situations with the same actors. The possibility of being victimized has a similar effect as in-group favoritism on bystanders' willingness to stand up for the victim. This result also holds for perpetrators who attempt to take less from a similar victim. In the third chapter, we test the long-term assumption that third-party punishment arises because people want to enforce social norms. We use an experience as an exogenous tool for shifting empirical expectations and identify their positive causal effect on punishment decisions. In the fourth study, I examine how feeling of entitlement and self-selection affect final allocation when subjects compete to be in a position of power. People who participate in a competition transfer less even if they do not invest much.
