Spanish foreign policy in the Mediterranean

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the foreign policy of the Kingdom of Spain in relation to Mediterranean. The thesis will analyse how country has participated and participates in affairs in the Mediterranean area on different levels of cooperation as is an influential actor and stood in the origin of many forums and organizations. The main objective will be to identify concepts of enforcement of policies and attitudes in a given area but also on higher levels. Primarily it is a European level of cooperation, so the Europeanisation concept will be applied to analyse the problem. On the one hand, there is Spain as a powerful player with significant influence on the formation of policies not only at the national level but also at the European and international levels. On the other hand, the policies and attitudes are pronounced also on higher levels and Spain as a member state has to submit to the whole. The research questions are formulated similarly: 1) What are the goals of the Spanish Mediterranean Policy? 2) How does Spain communicate them on the supranational level? 3) Is Spain successful in achieving its goals and enforcing its interests?

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa bude zaoberať zahraničnou politikou Španielskeho kráľovstva voči Stredomoriu. Práca bude analyzovať, akým spôsobom sa krajina zúčastňovala a zúčastňuje na dianí v mediteránnej oblasti na rôznych úrovniach spolupráce, keďže je vplyvným aktérom a stála pri vzniku mnohých fór a organizácií. Hlavným cieľom bude zistiť spôsob presadzovania politík a postojov v danej oblasti, ale aj na vyšších úrovniach. Pôjde predovšetkým o európsku úroveň, preto bude na zanalyzovanie problému použitý koncept europeizácie. Na jednej strane stojí Španielsko ako silný aktér, ktorý má určitý vplyv na formovanie politík nielen na národnej, ale aj na európskej a medzinárodnej úrovni. Na druhej strane sú postoje formulované aj na vyšších úrovniach a Španielsko ako členský štát sa musí podriadiť celku. Výskumné otázky sú formulované obdobne: 1) Aké sú ciele španielskej stredomorskej politiky? 2) Akým spôsobom ich komunikuje na nadnárodnej úrovni? 3) Je Španielsko úspešné v dosahovaní svojich cieľov a presadzovaní svojich záujmov?
