Theological Paralels of Nag Hammadí codices and Qumran scrolls: Were the Essenes the First Gnostics ?

Abstract:

The goal of the thesis is on the basis of the analysis of selected texts – Secret Revelation of John, Hypostasis of Archons, Apocalypses of Adam and Manual of Discipline examine the character of theological analogies founded in texts and support the theory of the origin of Gnosticism in the circles of Hellenized Judaism. The thesis is grounded in broader context of the discussion about the origins of Gnosticism, especially in the theory of the independence of Gnosticism origins upon the Christianity with the overhang to pre-Christian era. The hypothesis of the thesis is the connection between both groups of texts is the influence of Jewish apocalyptic literature. Conclusions of the work support the theory of the thesis and the theory of Jewish origins of Gnosticism. The thesis suggest the existence of ideological continuum in Near East during the era of Hellenism and Roman Empire which can be traced in both libraries in similar ways of interpretations of actual political situation.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce na základe analýzy štyroch vybraných prameňov – Tajnej knihy Jánovej, Podstaty Archontov, Adamovej apokalypsy a Rádu Jednoty preskúmať povahu myšlienkových analógií v textoch a podporiť hypotézu o vzniku gnosticizmu v okrajových prúdoch helenizovaného judaizmu. Práca je ukotvená v širšom kontexte debaty o pôvode gnosticizmu, konkrétne o jeho nezávislom pôvode na kresťanstve s eventuálnym presahom do predkresťanskej doby. Hypotézou práce je tvrdenie, že spojivom medzi oboma skupinami textov je vplyv židovskej apokalyptickej literatúry. Zistenia práce podporili toto tvrdenie a tým aj teóriu o židovskom pôvode gnosticizmu. Práca naznačuje myšlienkové kontinuum, ktoré panovalo na Blízkom Východe v období helenizmu a rímskej nadvlády, ktoré je vystopovateľné v obidvoch knižniciach v spoločných motívoch interpretácie aktuálnej spoločenskej situácie.
