Spectrality in Native Canadian Gothic Literature

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá fenoménem nadpřirozena v kanadské nativní gotické literatuře. Práce demonstruje, jak domorodí autoři pracují s gotickým žánrem a přetvářejí jej, aby vyhovoval jejich politickým i uměleckým záměrům, a dávají mu jedinečné, kulturně specifické rysy. Na základě dvou děl z pera kanadských domorodých autorů, Monkey Beach (2000) autorky Eden Robinson a The Night Wanderer: A Native Gothic Story (2007) autora Drewa Haydena Taylora, práce identifikuje tři typy nadpřirozených bytostí objevujících se v kanadské nativní literatuře: duchy minulosti, rodilé a převzaté přízraky. Hlavním zájmem práce je poté jejich forma a funkce. V obou dílech jsou nadpřirozené bytosti zbaveny gotických rysů a vystupují v roli průvodců mladých hrdinek na cestě k objevení jejich domorodých kořenů a přijmutí jejich kmenového kulturního dědictví, čímž obnovují domorodou tradici na pozadí moderní, Euro-Americky orientované kanadské společnosti. Z toho vyplývá, že práce primárně shledává jako hlavní roli nadpřirozena v kanadské nativní literatuře jeho nápomoc při uvědomění si a překonání kulturního a duchovního traumatu domorodých národů Kanady, které vyvolala Evropská kolonizace Kanady.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the phenomenon of spectrality in Native Canadian Gothic literature. It shows how Native authors work with the genre of the Gothic and transform it to suit their political and artistic purposes, giving it unique, culturally specific features. On the example of two novels written by Native Canadian authors, Eden Robinson’s Monkey Beach (2000) and Drew Hayden Taylor’s The Night Wanderer: A Native Gothic Story (2007), there are identified three types of spectres appearing in the Native writing: ghosts of the past, native and imported monsters. The main focus of the thesis is on the form and function of these spectres. In both novels, the supernatural creatures are de-Gothicized and they are the guides of the young heroines on thier ways towards discovering their Native identities and accepting their tribal cultural heritages, thus reviving the Native tradition on the backdrop of the modern, Euro-American oriented Canadian society. Hence, the thesis primarily identifies the role of the spectres in Native Canadian literature as that of an important instruments in acknowledging and overcoming the cultural and spiritual trauma inflicted upon the Native communities by the settler policies.
