Distribution of radionuclides in fluvial sediments and possibilities of their monitoring

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem disertační práce bylo získat systematické údaje o distribuci radionuklidů v říčním prostředí a posoudit možnosti jejich stanovení. Výzkum byl prováděn v české části Hornoslezské uhelné pánve, která je silně ovlivněná těžbou uhlí. Sledovány byly tři toky ovlivněné vypouštěním důlních vod. Během výzkumu byly použity tři metody monitorování radionuklidů a byla vyhodnocena vhodnost jejich použití. Při terénních pochůzkových měřeních byl gamaspektrometrem monitorován prostorový příkon dávkového ekvivalentu (PPDE) v oblasti toků o celkové délce 11,5 km. K přesnému stanovení obsahu radionuklidů byla použita laboratorní gamaspektrometrie a následně byla použita rentgenová fluorescence ke stanovení prvkového složení 29 vzorků říčních sedimentů. Byla posouzena možnost využití dronu pro letecké monitorování radiace. Bylo odebráno osm vzorků vody, které byly analyzovány na obsah hlavních iontů a radionuklidů. Při terénních pochůzkových měřeních byla ve všech třech tocích nalezena místa s úrovní radiace přesahující 1000 nSv/h. Z výsledků měření vyplívá, že vypouštěné důlní vody jsou výhradním zdrojem radioaktivní ale i neradioaktivní kontaminace toků. Sekundární kontaminace splachem z uhelných hald se ukázala jako zanedbatelná. Vypouštěné důlní vody výrazně ovlivňují parametry vodních toků, konkrétně vodivost, koncentraci hlavních kationtů a aniontů, aktivitu 226Ra a koncentraci U i několik kilometrů od výpustí důlních vod. Bylo prokázáno, že tvar koryta, přítomnost tůní, zejména těch s vodními rostlinami, jsou významnými faktory ovlivňujícími distribuci kontaminantů v říčním prostředí. V některých případech zůstává radiace, a tedy obsah kontaminantů, zvýšená i ve vzdálenosti větší než 3,5 km od výpusti důlních vod. Obsah kontaminantů v říčních sedimentech s hloubkou rapidně klesá a aktivity/koncentrace kontaminantů v hloubce 0,5 m byly srovnatelné s úrovní pozadí. Bylo prokázáno, že izotopy Ra a 228Th a prvky jako V, Sr a Cr mají velmi podobný vývoj aktivity/koncentrace a jsou nejsilnějšími kontaminanty s nejvyšším nabohacením. Výsledky korelací radionuklidů s neradioaktivními prvky prokázaly, že sorpce na jílové minerály není hlavním mechanismem odstraňování radionuklidů z vody. Byla navržena metoda odhadu aktivity/koncentrace radionuklidů na základě jejich korelací s prvky měřenými pomocí XRF, která může výrazně urychlit proces průzkumu rozsáhlé lokality. Cíle práce byly splněny a byly získány nové poznatky v oblasti monitorování a hodnocení radionuklidové a prvkové kontaminace říčního prostředí.

Abstract:

The main objective of the dissertation thesis was to obtain systematic data on the distribution of radionuclides in the riverine environment and to assess the possibilities of their determination. The research took place in Czech part of Upper Silesian Coal Basin which is heavily affected by coal mining. Three streams affected by discharged mine water were monitored. During this research, three radionuclide monitoring methods were used, and their suitability was evaluated. Total length of 11.5 km of the streams were monitored during field walking with gamma spectrometer to measure the ambient dose equivalent rate (ADER). Laboratory gamma spectrometry was used to precisely determine the content of radionuclides followed by X-ray fluorescence to determine the elemental composition of 29 samples of riverine sediments. The possibility of using a drone for aerial radiation monitoring was evaluated. Eight water samples were collected and analyzed for the content of major ions and radionuclides. Places with levels of radiation, exceeding 1000 nSv/h, were found during the field walking measurements within all three streams. The results of measurements indicates that the discharged mine waters are the exclusive source of the radioactive but also non-radioactive contamination of the streams. The secondary contamination by flush from the coal heaps surrounding the areas proved to be negligible. The discharged mine waters greatly affect the parameters of stream waters, namely conductivity, concentration of major cations and anions, the activity concentration of 226Ra and the concentration of U even several kilometers far from the discharge. It has been proven that the shape of riverbed, presence of ponds especially ponds with water plants are very important factors influencing the distribution of contaminants in riverine environment. In some cases, the radiation and therefore the content of contaminants remains elevated even more than 3.5 km far from discharge. The content of contaminants in sediments decrees rapidly with depth and the activity concentration/concentrations of contaminants in depth of 0.5 meters were comparable to background levels. It has been proven that the isotopes of Ra and 228Th and elements such as V, Sr and Cr have very similar evolution of activity concentration/concentration and are the strongest contaminants with highest enrichment. The results of correlations of radionuclides with non-radioactive elements proved that the sorption to clay minerals is not the leading mechanism of radionuclides removal from the water. The method for estimation of activity concentration/concentration of radionuclides based on their correlations with elements measured by XRF that could significantly speed up the process of surveying a large site has been proposed. The objectives of the thesis were met, and new insights were gained in the field of monitoring and assessment of radionuclide and elemental contamination of riverine environment.
