Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce nazvaná „Britská výchovná literatura 18. století“ se zabývá výzkumem vývoje výchovné literatury v Británii 18. století počínaje manuály a výchovnými knihami, a konče jejími beletrizovanými formami. Jednotlivé podžánry jsou zastoupeny díly jejich nejznámějších autorů: Johna Gregoryho (1724-1773), Mary Wollstonecraftové (1759-1797) a Fanny Burneyové (1752-1840). Výchovná literatura určovala v 18. století ideál ženství. Dávala ženám rady, jak se chovat ve vyšší společnosti, a připravovala je na nejdůležitější roli v jejich životě – na manželství. Tyto knihy učily mladé dívky, jak být dobrými, žádoucími a poslušnými manželkami a dcerami.

Abstract:

The main aim of the thesis entitled “18th-Century British Conduct Literature” is to examine the development of conduct literature starting from conduct manuals, through conduct books to fictionalized forms of conduct literature. Each subgenre is represented by one illustrative text: A Father’s Legacy to His Daughters (1761) by John Gregory (1724-1773), Thoughts Concerning Education of Daughters (1787) by Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797), and Evelina (1778) by Fanny Burney (1752-1840). Conduct literature fixed the 18th-century ideal of womanhood. Ladies were given advice as to how behave in a respectable society. Most of the works were addressed to women with the intention to perfect their nature and to prepare themselves for the one role in their lives – to be good, desirable and obedient wives. Courtship and the rules connected to it represent a marginal part of the thesis.
