Preference Utilitarianism of Peter Singer

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je bližší představení morálních problémů spojovaných s preferenčním utilitarismem – morální teorií navrženou Peterem Singerem. Práce se zabývá historickým pozadím utilitarismu, stejně jako jeho současnými problémy. Preferenční utilitarismus a utilitarismus obecně je obhajován proti uváděným námitkám, které se ukázaly jako nedostatečné. Je explikována Singerova teorie. Představeny a vysvětleny jsou její základy, stejně jako závěry které z nich plynou. Dále je rozebrán spor Singerových závěrů a běžného názoru na morální problémy. V závěru práce je proto učiněn pokus o modifikaci Singerovy teorie myšlenkami Dereka Parfita a tím o její harmonizaci s běžným názorem.

Abstract:

The goal of this diploma thesis is to present closer look at problems associated with preference utilitarianism – moral theory designed by Peter Singer. This thesis deals with historical background of utilitarianism as well as its current problems. Preference utilitarianism and utilitarianism in general is defended against presented objections, which are shown to be unsufficient. Singer's theory is explicated. Its fundaments are stated and explained as well as conclusions derivated from them. The clash of these conclusions with common sense morality is further presented. And at the end of this thesis an attempt to modify Singer's theory by thoughts of Derek Parfit is made in order to hormonize Singers theory with common sense.
