Analysis of factors influencing litter size in selected dog breeds

Abstract:

Existuje několik faktorů ovlivňujících velikost vrhu u psů. Některé počet štěňat ve vrhu mohou zvyšovat a některé snižovat. Jsou jimi velikost plemene, věk feny, metoda páření, sezóna porodu, pořadí vrhu od feny a koeficient inbreedingu.Cílem této práce bylo zjistit, jak velikostní kategorie a plemeno psa ovlivňuje velikost vrhu. Do studie byla zařazena česká a slovenská plemena psů – pražský krysařík, český teriér, český strakatý pes, slovenský kopov, chodský pes, československý vlčák, český fousek, český horský pes a slovenský čuvač. Plemena byla rozdělena do 3 velikostních skupin – malá, střední a velká plemena podle váhy psa. Zjišťován byl i poměr psů a fen ve vrzích, zda je vyrovnaný či některé pohlaví převažuje.Analýzou byly zjištěny statisticky význmané rozdíly mezi velikostními skupinami psů. Malá plemena psů měla štěňat nejméně, průměrně 2,52, středně velká plemena psů od 10 do 25 kilogramů měla průměrně 5,76 štěňat a velká plemena psů měla v průměru 6,35 štěňat. Rozdíl existuje i mezi některými plemeny, a to i vrámci jednotlivých skupin. Mezi malými plemeny, mezi které patří pražský krysařík a český teriér, a ostatními plemeny psů je rozdíl významný. U dalších plemen psů byl rozdíl zjištěn jen mezi některými plemeny, jako mezi slovenským kopovem a chodským psem, československým vlčákem a chodským psem a českým fouskem a chodským psem. Věk matky štěňat zjištěné výsledky statisticky průkazně neovlivňoval. Co se týče poměru pohlaví u těchto 9 plemen psů, byl přibližně vyrovnaný počet narozených fen i psů.

Abstract:

There are several factors that affect litter size in dogs. Some may increase the number of puppies in the litter and some may decrease. These are the size of the breed, the age of the bitch, the mating method, the birth season, the order of the litter from the bitch and the coefficient of inbreeding.The aim of this work was to find out how the size category and breed of dog affects the litter size. The study included Czech and Slovak breeds of dogs - prague ratter, czech terrier, bohemian spotted dog, slovakian hound, bohemian shepherd dog, czechoslovakian wolfdog, bohemian wire- haired pointing griffon, czech mountain dog and slovakian chuvach. The breeds were divided into 3 size groups - small, medium and large breeds according to the weight of the dog. The ratio of dogs and bitches in the litters was also determined, whether they are balanced or some sex predominates.The analysis revealed statistically significant differences between the size groups of dogs. Small breeds of dogs had the least puppies, on average 2,52, medium-sized breeds of dogs from 10 to 25 kilograms had an average of 5,76 puppies and large breeds of dogs had an average of 6,35 puppies. There is also a difference between some breeds, even within individual groups. There is a significant difference between small breeds, including the prague ratter and the czech terrier, and other dog breeds. In other breeds of dogs, the difference was found only between some breeds, such as between the slovakian hound and bohemian shepherd dog, czechoslovakian wolfdog and bohemian shepherd dog and bohemian wire- haired pointing griffon and bohemian shepherd dog. The age of the mother of the puppies did not statistically significantly affect the results. Regarding the sex ratio in these 9 breeds of dogs, the number of born bitches and dogs was approximately balanced.
