The stigma of the involuntary childlessness from the gender point of view

Abstract:

Tato kvalifikační práce se zabývá tématem nedobrovolné bezdětnosti v sociálním kontextu. Při výzkumu jsem spolupracovala s páry, které se minimálně po dobu jednoho roku s tímto problémem potýkají. V současné době je jejich léčba buď stále bez úspěchu, nebo se s problémem vyrovnaly jiným způsobem. Práce si kladla za cíl osvětlit zkušenosti respondentů s bezdětností, pro kterou se sami nerozhodli, konfrontovat jejich negativní pocity s tím, jak se k tomuto problému staví dnešní společnost. Práce se zabývá otázkou, zda jsou tímto stavem páry stigmatizovány a zda je tato zkušenost horší pro muže, nebo pro ženy. Důležitá je také otázka vyrovnání se se situací, ochota k alternativním řešením například ve formě adopce. Práce využívá kvalitativních metod výzkumu. Pro sběr dat byly použity hloubkové rozhovory se čtyřmi bezdětnými páry.

Abstract:

This graduate thesis deals with the theme of involuntary childlessness in a social context. Whilst doing the research, I cooperated with pairs who have battled this problem for the minimum of one year. At present, their treatment is unsuccessful or they have solved their problem in a different manner. The aim of this thesis was to show the experience of those suffering from childlessness, which was not a choice of their own, and how they confront their negative feelings in the face of stigma generated by society. My thesis is concerned with whether couples are stigmatized by this state and if this experience is more traumatizing for men or women. Also the question of coping with this situation and willingness to find alternative solutions such as adoption seem to be important. I have employed quality methods of research for completing my work as well as in-depth interviews with four childless couples for data collecting.
