Children Characters in the Work of Ian McEwan

Abstract:

Childhood, along with social taboos, such as rape or incest, and dysfunctional family relationships, is a very frequent topic in Ian McEwan's fiction. The aim of my bachelor's thesis is to analyze and describe the perception of childhood and adolescence in the adult world depicted in two of his novels - The Cement Garden and Atonement. The main part of the thesis deals with summarising and analysing the plot of both selected works and also creating a psychological profile of each child protagonist as well as the family background in order to prove that while creating his characters' characteristics, the author follows similar pattern and therefore their ways of thinking resemble one another in many aspects.

Abstract:

Dětství, spolu se společenskými tabu, jako například znásilnění či incest, a dysfunkční rodinné vztahy, je velmi častým tématem v dílech Iana McEwana. Cílem mé bakalářské práce je analyzovat a popsat vnímání dětství a dospívání ve světě dospělých zachycené ve dvou jeho románech - Betonová zahrada a Pokání. Hlavní část mé práce se zabývá shrnutím a analýzou děje obou vybraných děl a také tvorbou psychologického profilu každého dětského protagonisty, stejně tak rodinnou situací ve snaze dokázat, že při tvorbě charakteru svých postav autor používá podobný vzorec, a proto jsou si jejich způsoby myšlení v mnoha aspektech podobné.
