Non-classical conception of democracy: comparison of Schumpeter and Popper

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá teorií demokracie, konkrétně neklasickými pojetími dvou významných autorů, K. R. Poppera a J. A. Schumpetera. Oba autoři soudili, že klasická doktrína demokracie je neudržitelná a navrhli její revizi. Zároveň však oba autoři přistoupili k problematice rozdílně a srovnání jejich teorií proto v daných teoriích odhaluje značné rozdíly. Pro odhalení těchto rozdílů jsme zvolili komparaci podle pěti klíčových komparačních kritérií v rámci kontextuální analýzy primárních textů. Tato metoda vedla k naplnění cíle této práce, který odpověděl na předložené výzkumné otázky. Podstatné rozdíly mezi teoriemi se objevily zejména v oblasti jedince a jeho role ve společnosti, modu operandi demokracie a u otázky hodnot v teorii demokracie. Rozdíly byly také pozorovány v povaze teorií ve vztahu k normativitě, nicméně zároveň bylo zjištěno, že stupeň normativity je přítomen u obou teorií. Odpověďmi na výzkumné otázky se nám podařilo naplnit cíl práce, tedy popsat konkrétní rozdíly v pojetí demokracie u analyzovaných autorů. Tím byl naplněn i smysl práce, kterým je přispění k odhalování hodnotících soudů v ontologických pozicích jednotlivých autorů u fenoménu demokracie. Odlišnost obou pozic je evidentní, byť jistá míra normativity je přítomná u obou autorů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the theory of democracy, namely the so-called non-classical concept of two prominent thinkers, K. R. Popper and J. A. Schumpeter. Both thinkers believed that the classical doctrine of democracy is untenable and they propose its revision. At the same time, however, both authors approaches to the issue differently and comparison of their theories reveals major differences between them. To reveal these differences, we chose a comparison of the five comparative criteria within the contextual analysis of core texts. This method led to the main goal of this thesis, which was to answer the research questions and therefore a description of the specific aspects of analyzed theories. Substantial differences arose from the comparisn between the two theories in the field of the individual and its role in society, the modus operandi of democracy and the question of values in theory of democracy. Differences were also observed in the nature of the theories in relation to normativity, but at the same time it was found that degree of normativity is present in both theories. A sense of work was reached by the answers to the research as well, which contributed to the detection of value judgments in the ontological positions of the individual authors within the phenomenon of democracy.
