Comparison of approaches to the creation and maintenance of Internet moving image archives using the example of the National Film Archive

Abstract:

This master's thesis entitled "Comparison of approaches to the creation and maintenance of digital archives of moving images on the example of the National Film Archive" focuses on the examination of approaches to the creation and maintenance of digital databases of moving images within five pre-selected archives. It is primarily based on the project of the National Film Archive, Prague (hereinafter referred to as NFA) - "Audiovisual work outside the context of cinematography: documentation, archiving and access", which took place during the years 2020 and 2023. In the first chapter of the theoretical part, the thesis is devoted to the history of the preservation and presentation of works of art since prehistoric times to the present day and then it is focused on the phenomenon of digital curation. In the next chapter, it examines the phenomenon of collecting in more detail and defines terms such as "archive", "database", "collection" and "collection" in order to introduce the next chapter, focused on the already mentioned NFA project. It examines its overall course together with the reason for its origin, development, and final impact. It uses the methodology that was created as one of the outputs of the project, as well as interviews conducted with the main manager of the project - Sylva Poláková. At the end of the theoretical part, the thesis deals with four other digital databases – Irish Artist's Film Index archive, LUX Collection, UbuWeb and Vašulka Kitchen Brno. Especially in relation to their approach to archiving moving image artworks. In the practical part, the thesis compares the acquired knowledge and at the same time, through this comparison, answers the main question of how to reliably preserve and make the art of the moving image accessible. At the same time, it also confirms or denies the hypothesis that moving image artworks can be efficiently and reliably preserved indefinitely in an online database.

Magisterská diplomová práca s názvom „Komparácia prístupov k tvorbe a spravovaniu digitálnych archívov pohyblivého obrazu na príklade Národního filmového archivu“ sa zameriava na preskúmanie prístupov k tvorbe a spravovaniu digitálnych databáz pohyblivého obrazu v rámci piatich vopred vybraných archívov. Primárne pritom vychádza z projektu Národního filmového archivu, Praha (ďalej iba NFA) – „Audiovizuální dílo mimo kontext kinematografie: dokumentace, archivace a zpřístupnění“, ktorý bol realizovaný v rokoch 2020 až 2023. V prvej kapitole teoretickej časti sa práca venuje histórii uchovávania a prezentácii umeleckých diel od praveku po súčasnosť a následne plynule prechádza do skúmania fenoménu digitálneho kurátorstva. V ďalšej kapitole detailnejšie skúma jav zberateľstva a definuje pojmy ako „archív“, „databáza“, „kolekcia“ a „zbierka“ za účelom uvedenia nasledujúcej kapitoly, zameranej na už spomínaný projekt NFA. Skúma pritom jeho celkový priebeh spoločne s dôvodom vzniku, vývojom a konečným dopadom. Využíva k tomu metodiku, ktorá vznikla ako jeden z výstupov projektu a tiež rozhovory uskutočnené s hlavnou konateľkou projektu – Sylvou Polákovou. V závere teoretickej časti sa práca venuje ďalším štyrom digitálnym databázam – archívu Irish Artist’s Film Index, LUX Collection, UbuWeb a Vašulka Kitchen Brno. Najmä v súvislosti s ich prístupom k archivácii umeleckých diel pohyblivého obrazu. V praktickej časti práca porovnáva získané poznatky a zároveň tak prostredníctvom tejto komparácie zodpovedá hlavnú otázku ako spoľahlivo uchovávať a sprístupňovať umenie pohyblivého obrazu. Zároveň tiež potvrdzuje, či prípadne vyvracia hypotézu, že umelecké diela pohyblivého obrazu je možné efektívne a spoľahlivo uchovať na dobu neurčitú v prostredí online databáz.
