Loss of contact with outdoor in contemporary Western societies

Abstract:

V současné době existuje několik zahraničních výzkumů zabývajících otázkou měnícího se množství času, který představitelé soudobé západní společnosti tráví ve venkovním prostředí. Záměrem teoretické části diplomové práce bylo propojit poznatky těchto dílčích výzkumů a vytvořit tak první ucelený česky psaný přehled, který věnuje výhradní pozornost této problematice. Ve snaze zajistit co největší přehlednost a usnadnit orientaci v předkládané práci jsou studie děleny do tří skupin – kapitol: výzkumy z prostředí divoké přírody (angl. wilderness/wildland), výzkumy z venkovního prostředí (angl. outdoor) a přírody (angl. nature) a výzkumy z prostředí zeleně (angl. greenery). Na zmíněné pasáže navazuje kapitola zabývající se vývojem času tráveného ve virtuálním prostředí. V teoretické části se ukázalo, že nelze jednoznačně určit, zdali kontaktu s venkovním prostředím v soudobé západní společnosti ubývá. Ukázalo se také, že dané téma je daleko lépe zmapované u dětí nežli u dospělých – práce se tedy spíše zaměřuje na úbytek kontaktu s venkovním prostředím u dětí. Za nejužívanější metodu měření lze v této problematice považovat dotazníkové šetření. Empirická část diplomové práce rozšířila okruh dosavadních poznatků o porovnání různých metod měření množství času, který lidé tráví venku. Mezi výsledky vycházejícími na základě odlišných metod se projevily významné statistické rozdíly. Ty mohly být způsobeny například formou dotazování a časovým rozestupem mezi dobou dotazování a měřeným chováním.

Abstract:

At present there is little international research exploring the topic of changes in the amount of time that citizens of contemporary western society spend outdoors. The aim of the theoretical part of this thesis was to examine the findings of this partial research and to create the first Czech piece of research solely focused on this topic. In order to ensure the greatest possible clarity the thesis research was divided into three distinct areas: research from wilderness/wildland, research from the outdoors and nature and finally research from greenery. These chapters are followed by a chapter containing research focused on the growth of time spent in virtual reality. As it has been demonstrated, it can’t be assumed that the theoretical part mostly consists of critically examining studies that claim that contact with the outdoors has been decreasing in contemporary western societies. In the theoretical part it is demonstrated that this topic has been much better explored and examined in the case of children than adults – so the thesis focused more on the loss of contact with nature of children. The most common form of methodology was a questionnaire. The empirical part of this thesis extends the current field of knowledge by comparing the different methods of measuring the amount of time spent outside. Among the results taken from the different methods of measurment, there were found significant statistical differences. The reason why can be that these methods differentiate from each other by, both the form of the of questions, and the time gap between questioning and the measured behaviour.
