Changes in a Mothers Life as the Consequence of Taking Care of a Mentally Retarded Child

Abstract:

Diplomová práce „Proměny v životě matky v důsledku péče o dítě s mentálním postižením“ pojednává o vlivu dítěte s postižením na život matky. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a praktickou část. V úvodu teoretické části je předložen obraz rodiny po sdělení vážné diagnózy dítěte a popsány strategie a faktory, které ovlivňují přijetí skutečnosti postižení dítěte jeho rodiči. Dále jsou v práci vymezeny možné problémy, potřeby a zdroje pomoci, včetně přínosu svépomocných skupin. Pozornost je věnovaná vztahovým a sociálním aspektům vlivu přítomnosti dítěte s postižením v rodině a psychosociálním dopadům na matku samotnou. Praktická část je věnovaná kvalitativnímu výzkumu, jehož cílem je zjistit a popsat, k jakým změnám dochází v životě matky v důsledku péče o dítě. Práce odkrývá jednotlivé změny, za jakých podmínek k nim dochází a co tyto změny u matky vyvolávají.

Abstract:

My thesis “Changes in a Mother’s Life as the Consequence of Taking Care of a Mentally Retarded Child” deals with the impact of a disabled child on changes in a mother’s life. The work is divided into two parts; theoretical and practical. The introduction of the theoretical part pictures a family after being informed about their child’s serious diagnosis and describes strategies and factors which influence parents´ acceptance of the reality of their child’s disability. In addition, the work enumerates possible problems, needs and sources of help, including the benefit of self-help groups. Attention is paid to relational and social aspects of the impact of a disabled child being in a family and to psychosocial impacts on the mother herself. The practical part is dedicated to the qualitative research, the aim of which is to find out and describe what changes happen in a mother’s life as the consequence of taking care of a disabled child. My work lists individual changes, under which conditions they occur and what they invoke in the mother.
