A Kind Critique: The Depiction of Suburbia in John Cheever's Short Stories
Abstract:
Cílem této bakalářské práce je analýza čtyř vybraných povídek Johna Cheevera, především pak způsobu, jakým přistupuje ke svým postavám a ztvárňuje jejich život na předměstí. Ve svých povídkách Cheever zaujímá moralizující a zároveň obhajující postoj, jenž je, společně s jeho častou sebereflexí, v této práci označován jako "laskavá kritika".
Abstract:
The aim of this Bachelor thesis is to analyze four short stories written by John Cheever. The primary focus is on the way Cheever approaches the topic of suburbia and his characters. The term "kind critique" is introduced for it best expresses Cheever's use of moralizing and defending attitude, together with his frequent self-reflection.
