Determination of SVOCs levels in air and dust from schools

Abstract:

V této bakalářské práci charakterizuji částečně těkavé organické sloučeniny (SVOCs) se zaměřením na polycyklické aromatické uhlovodíky (PAHs), které se vyskytují jak ve vnitřním, tak ve vnějším prostředí školek a škol v Brně. Tyto polutanty se dostávají do prostředí hlavně antropogenním způsobem, jako je průmysl, doprava a vytápění budov. U mnoha z těchto polutantů byly prokázány negativní vlivy na lidské zdraví a životní prostředí. Jak už při krátkodobé, tak také dlouhodobé expozici mají negativní vliv na nervový, krevní a dýchací systém. Děti tráví hodně času ve vnitřním prostředí škol. Zároveň si děti hrají na podlaze či koberci, a tak jsou lehce vystaveny těmto polutantům, které se většinou vyskytují v usazeném prachu. Do organismu se látky dostávají ingescí, inhalací i dermální expozicí. V teoretické části se zabývám popisem vlastností hlavních zástupců SVOCs s důrazem na PAHs, popisem metod vzorkování prachu a vzduchu, přípravy vzorku a samotnou analýzou. V praktické části byly vyhodnoceny koncentrace PAHs ve vzduchu a prachu v pěti mateřských a pěti základních školách v Brně. Hladiny těchto látek byly porovnány s naměřenými hodnotami z jiných studií. A to jak z vnitřních, tak i venkovních prostor škol v zahraničí i v rámci České republiky. Koncentrace PAHs byla vyšší ve vnitřním prostředí než ve venkovním prostředí. Sloučeniny s největší koncentrací jsou následovné: fenanthren, fluoranthen, pyren, naftalen, acenaften, fluoren a bifenyl. Školky a školy nacházející se v centru Brna, blízko silniční dopravy a průmyslových zdrojů PAHs, mají vyšší vnitřní a venkovní hladinu PAHs než ty, které se nacházejí na předměstí či venkově.

Abstract:

In this thesis I characterized levels of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) focusing on PAH occurrence in the indoor and outdoor microenvironment of kindergartens and schools. These pollutants enter the environment primarily from anthropogenic sources such as industry, transport, and heating and they have a negative influence on human health and the environment. Adverse effects on human health were observed for many of these compounds. Long-term, as well as short-term, exposures can negatively influence human nervous, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Children spend much of their time in indoor areas, in houses and education facilities. They play on the floor and carpet, so they may be easily exposed to pollutants, particularly those in settled dust. Pollutants enter the body by ingestion, inhalation and dermal exposure. The theoretical part of this thesis gives background on the main properties of SVOCs, focusing on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), describes sampling of dust and air, sample preparation and analysis. In the practical part, the PAH concentrations in the air and dust from five kindergartens and five primary schools were measured to characterize children’s exposure to PAHs. Compound levels were compared with data from other studies from foreign schools and from Czech indoor areas. The concentration of PAHs was higher in indoor areas than outdoors and the compounds with the highest concentration were phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, naphthalene, acenaphthene, fluorene, and biphenyl. Kindergartens and schools in the central urban area, close to traffic and industrial sources of PAHs, had higher indoor and outdoor levels of PAHs than those in suburban and rural areas.
