The situation of single-screen cinemas in Brno after the construction of a multiplex cinema in Olympia

Abstract:

V práci nabízím přehled toho, jak vypadala jednosálová kina a jaký měla provoz. Dřívější jednosálová kina měla svoje jisté publikum, protože žádná multikina v okolí nebyla. Diváci si svůj film mohli vybrat celkem ve třinácti kinech, přičemž ta v centru byla premiérová a kina na okrajích měla filmy reprízované. Ve většině případů šly premiérové filmy do Scaly či Kapitolu, kde bylo více míst pro diváky a distributoři měli za jedno představení větší výdělek. Práce zkoumala především období tří let po vybudování multikina a ukazovala vývoj vlivu multikina na kina jednosálová.

Abstract:

The thesis gives an overview of how single-screen cinemas looked like and how it worked. Previously, single-screen cinemas had their audience because there was no multiplex in Brno. The viewers could choose to watch a movie in one of the 13 cinemas that were there in those times, the movie which they want to see or they simply go to watch a movie which was played in their local cinema. The cinemas in the city center were considered as premiere cinemas and the cinemas on the outskirts of the city played the reprises. This was not the rule, but in most cases, the premier movies were played either in Scala or in the Capitol cinema, which provides for spectators more seats than smaller cinemas and where the distributors earned more money for one show. The thesis also studies how the situation changed after building a multiplex and wants to show the development of the multiplex's impact on single-screen cinemas.
