Computing twin-width parametrized by restrictive parameters

Abstract:

Twin-width je strukturální grafový parametr představený v roce 2020, který zahrnuje mnoho předtím známých grafových tříd, například rovinné grafy a grafy s omezenou clique-width. Je známo, že FO-model checking je FPT při parametrizaci přes twin-width (pokud je spolu se vstupem poskytnuta odpovídající kontrakční posloupnost). Špatnou zprávou je, že již rozhodování, jestli je twin-width grafu nejvýše 4, je NP-úplné. V této práci se zabýváme problémem vypočtu twin-width z pohledu teorie parametrizované složitosti. Konkrétně dokazujeme, že při parametrizaci přes feedback edge number získáme následující dva výsledky. Za prvé, získáme lineární bikernel pro problém zkonstruování kontrakční posloupnosti šířky nejvýše 2 nebo rozhodnutí, že žádná taková posloupnost neexistuje. Za druhé, získáme FPT algoritmus, který zkonstruuje kontrakční posloupnost šířky nejvýše o jedna vyšší než je twin-width zkoumaného grafu. Navíc k těmto algoritmickým výsledkům dokazujeme asymptoticky těsný horní odhad O(\sqrt{k}) na twin-width grafů s feedback edge number k.

Abstract:

Twin-width is a structural graph parameter introduced in 2020, which captures many previously known graph classes, such as planar graphs and classes of bounded clique-width. It is known that FO-model checking is FPT when parameterized by twin-width (if a corresponding contraction sequence is given as part of the input). Unfortunately, already deciding whether the twin-width of a graph is at most 4 is NP-complete. In this thesis, we approach the problem of computing twin-width from the point of view of parameterized complexity theory. Namely, we prove that when parameterizing by the feedback edge number, we obtain the following two results. First, we obtain a linear bikernel for the problem of constructing a contraction sequence of width at most 2 or determining that none exists. Second, we obtain a fixed-parameter algorithm that constructs a contraction sequence of width at most one higher than the twin-width of the given graph. In addition to these algorithmic results, we also prove an asymptotically tight upper bound O(\sqrt{k}) on twin-width for graphs with feedback edge number k.
