Přibice (Moravia): Reliability of demographic Assessment of sex/gender, age and stature in the field

Abstract:

The bachelor’s thesis „Přibice (Moravia): Reliability of demographic assessment of sex/gender, age and stature in the field“ deals with the issue of reliability and accuracy of field estimates of sex, age, and stature in comparison with the results of laboratory analysis. The thesis worked with data of 129 individuals whose skeletal remains were recovered during the archeological-anthropological research of the Hutterite cemetery in Přibice. Primary estimates of demographic indicators were directly recorded in the field into field forms. These data were subsequently compared with the laboratory results. The analysis of accuracy of sex estimation in the field worked with 87 individuals. The analysis of accuracy of age estimation in the field worked with all 129 individuals. For both analyses, the percentage of correct field estimates of these characteristics was the first to be evaluated. Subsequently, the existence of a relationship between the correct estimate of a demographic indicator and the degree of preservation of the skeleton was investigated using Fisher's test. In addition, for sex, the dependence between the correct estimate of sex in the field and the sex category determined in the laboratory was also investigated. The analysis of stature worked with only 25 individuals. A one-sample paired T-test was used to detect the difference between estimates of stature in the field and estimates of stature in the laboratory. Based on the results, it can be said that the best primary estimates are age estimates. Primary estimates of sex were correct only 57.47 % of the time, also the dependence of correct sex estimation on the degree of skeletal preservation was found. Stature estimation from the field was also found to be unreliable. Based on the results, a methodology for primary field estimation of demographic characteristics was proposed and the field form was modified to lead to better and more correct estimates.

Abstract:

Závěrečná bakalářská práce s názvem „Reliabilita terénního odhadu demografických ukazatelů na pohřebišti v Přibicích“ se věnuje problematice správnosti a spolehlivosti terénních odhadů pohlaví, dožitého věku a výšky postavy v porovnání s výsledky laboratorní analýzy. V práci se pracovalo s údaji 129 jedinců, jejichž kosterní pozůstatky byly vyzvednuty při archeologicko-antropologickém výzkumu novokřtěneckého pohřebiště v Přibicích. Primární odhady demografických ukazatelů byly v terénu zaznamenávány přímo do terénních formulářů. Tyto údaje byly následně porovnány s laboratorními výsledky. Při analýze správnosti odhadu pohlaví v terénu se pracovalo s 87 jedinci. Při analýze odhadu správnosti dožitého věku v terénu se pracovalo se všemi 129 jedinci. Při obou analýzách byl jako první vyhodnocený procentuální počet správných odhadů těchto ukazatelů v terénu. Následně byla pomocí Fisherova testu zjišťována existence závislosti mezi správným odhadem demografického ukazatele a stupněm zachovalosti kostry. U pohlaví byla navíc zjišťována také závislost mezi správným odhadem pohlaví v terénu a určenou kategorií pohlaví v laboratoři. Analýza odhadů výšky postavy jedinců pracovala jen s 25 jedinci. Pomocí jednovýběrového párového t-testu byl zjišťován rozdíl mezi odhady výšky postavy v terénu a odhady výšky postavy v laboratoři. Na základě výsledků lze říct, že nejlepšími primárními odhady jsou odhady věku. Primární odhady pohlaví byly správné jen v 57,47 % případech, také byla zjištěna závislost správného odhadu pohlaví na stupni zachování kostry. Odhad výšky v terénu se také prokázal jako nespolehlivý. Na základě výsledků byla navržena metodika primárních odhadů demografických ukazatelů v terénu a upraven terénní formulář tak, aby napomohl lepším a správnějším odhadům.
