Unruly Women: Gender Reflection in Shakespearean Films

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se soustřeďuje na analýzu odrazu genderového vývoje ve filmové tvorbě. Konkrétně se zabývá presentací Shakespearovských žen Juliet (Romeo a Julie) a Kateřiny (Zkrocení zlé ženy). Ačkoliv se skládá z pěti kapitol, práci lze rozdělit do dvou hlavních sekcí. První sekce se zabývá filmovým vývojem zpracování her Romeo a Julie a Zkrocení zlé ženy v kontextu hlavních historických událostí ovlivňujících genderové role ve společnosti. Po nastínění počátku vývoje němého filmu následuje zaměření na konkrétní zpracování her ve zvukovém filmu, za účelem blíže je přiblížit čtenáři. Praktická část této bakalářské práce pak tyto filmy dále analyzuje se zaměřením se na tři zásadní scény objevujících se v obou Shakespearových hrách. Interpretace těchto scén z genderového pohledu ukazuje proces dospívání hlavních ženských hrdinek filmů a síly, které skrz tento proces dosáhnout.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis concentrates on analysis of gender phenomena reflected in film production. It deals with a representation of Shakespearean female characters Juliet (Romeo and Juliet) and Katherine (The Taming of the Shrew) in motion pictures throughout the twentieth century. Though it contains four chapters, the content of the thesis might be divided into two main sections. First section deals with film in relation to context of adaptations of Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew as influenced by main historical events and gender roles in our society. After the Silent Era introduction, there follows more detailed concentration on eight specific movies in order to make the reader familiar with them. The practical part of the thesis further analyses specific sound movies with a concentration on three major scenes contained in both Shakespearean plays. Thesis reflects specific feminist and gender issues that arise from reworking of primary Shakespeare’s plays in the analyzed films. Interpretation of the scenes from the gender point of view displays the maturing process of the female characters and power gained throughout that process.
