Temperature as an ecological reproductive barier

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci se věnujeme významu teploty jako potenciální ekologické reprodukční bariéry mezi dvěma blízce příbuznými druhy čolků Lissotriton vulgaris a L. montandoni. Cílem této práce je porovnat znaky termální fyziologie, preferované tělesné teploty a teplotní závislost standardního metabolismu mezi populacemi rodičovských druhů a jejich přírodními hybridy. Jedinci z populací L. montandoni si v laboratorním termálním gradientu vybírali nižší tělesné teploty než L. vulgaris, což odpovídá rozdílům v teplotách jejich vodního prostředí. Teplotní závislost standardního metabolismu byla podobná u populací obou druhů. Proměnlivost energetických nákladů na údržbu byla nižší mezi druhy než v rámci druhu, konkrétně mezi populacemi L. vulgaris. Jedinci z hybridní populace měli teplotní nároky více podobné L. vulgaris než L. montandoni. Tyto výsledky naznačují, že rozdílné teplotní nároky obou druhů čolků mohou přispívat k jejich ekologické reprodukční bariéře např. výběrem stanoviště, asortativním pářením nebo selekcí proti hybridům.

Abstract:

In this thesis we focus on the importance of temperature as potential ecological reproductive barrier between two closely related newt species, Lissotriton vulgaris and L. montandoni. The aim of this study is to compare thermal physiology traits, preferred temperature of body and temperature dependence of standard metabolism between populations of parental species and their natural hybrids. In the laboratory thermal gradient, individiuals from L. montandoni populations chose lower body temperatures than L. vulgaris, which corresponds with differences in their environmental temperatures. Temperature dependence of standard metabolic rates was similar for populations of both species. Variation in energetic maintenance costs was lower between than within species, specifically between populations of L. vulgaris. Individuals from hybrid population had temperature requirements more similar to L. vulgaris than to L. montandoni. These results suggest different temperature requirements of both newt species may contribute to their ecological reproductive barrier, e.g. by their habitat choice, assortative mating, or selection against hybrids.
