Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vztahem Ruské federace a Spojeného království Velké Británie a Severního Irska v letech 2008 až 2014. Historicky byly tyto vztahy vždy poněkud problematické a také zkoumané období bylo charakteristické mnohými diplomatickými spory. Pro lepší pochopení vzájemných vztahů se práce zaměřuje na tři stěžejní události. V roce 2008 Velká Británie, zklamaná z nenaplnění naděje na zlepšení vztahů po příchodu nového prezidenta Dmitrije Medveděva, silně kritizovala Rusko za jeho vojenské zásahy v Gruzii. Otrávení bývalého špiona Alexandra Litviněnka rovněž ochladilo vzájemné vztahy. Po ruských zásazích na Ukrajině se tento případ stal diplomatickou zbraní. Ale když byl Sergej Magnitskij, ruský právník zaměstnaný u britské firmy Hermitage Capital, nalezen mrtev ve své cele v moskevském vězení, Británie jednala tiše. Na konci zkoumaného období se Ruská federace zapojila do konfliktu na východní Ukrajině a k anexi Krymu. Tyto činy se setkaly se zděšením ze strany Britů. Práce také zkoumá a upozorňuje na další oblasti sporů a spolupráce mezi Ruskem a Spojeným královstvím s cílem hlubšího pochopení problematiky. Ruská federace, na rozdíl od Velké Británie, vystupuje po celé zkoumané období ve své zahraniční politice konzistentně. Labouristická vláda se na počátku zkoumaného období pokoušela zastávat etickou zahraniční politiku, zatímco konzervativní vláda dávala přednost obchodu – ani jeden z postojů ovšem nevedl k přílišnému účinku.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis describes and examines the fractious relationship between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Russian Federation between 2008 and 2014. Historically, the two countries have rarely seen eye to eye and the period examined was characterised by many diplomatic disputes between the two countries. To explore how they interact, the thesis scrutinises three main events. In 2008, having hoped for better relations with new president Dmitry Medvedev, Britain strongly criticised Russia for invading Georgia. Running through the period, the radioactive poisoning of former spy Alexander Litvinenko soured relations before becoming a diplomatic weapon, which was used to smooth relations or irritate the Kremlin. But when Sergei Magnitsky, a Russian lawyer employed by a British investment firm, was found dead in his Moscow cell Britain did not join the international uproar and preferred to act quietly. At the end of the period, Russia went to war in Ukraine and annexed the Crimea, much to the dismay of the British. The thesis also examines and highlights further areas of conflict and cooperation between the Russia and the United Kingdom in order to better understand how diplomatic relations are carried out. It then argues that while Russia has acted consistently in it’s foreign policy, Britain has not. The Labour government at the beginning of the period attempted to utilise a moral foreign policy, while the Conservative-led coalition prioritised trade – neither to much of an effect.
