Moral Theories in the "Age of Reason"

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá morálními teoriemi ve "věku rozumu", tj. v době osvícenství (18. století). Jedná se o dvě antagonistické teorie - teorie mravních citů a teorie praktického rozumu. Teorie mravních citů je založena na sympatii jakožto hlavním prvku v mravním rozhodování a byla rozvinuta empiristickými filosofy Davidem Humem a Adamem Smithem. Protichůdná teorie praktického rozumu od racionalisty Immanuela Kanta je morálkou povinností, podle níž by se naše jednání mělo řídit rozumem, jenž určuje dobrou vůli všech rozumných bytostí. Čtenář se mimo jiné stručně seznámí s životy dotyčných filosofů, důraz je ale kladen na vysvětlení jednotlivých klíčových pojmů a jejich zasazení do širšího kontextu daných etických systémů. Například se dozvíme, jakou roli hraje užitečnost podle Huma, blahovůle, vděk a nevole podle Smithe a co Kant myslel svým pověstným kategorickým imperativem. Cílem práce je ovšem komparace obou mravních systémů a vytyčení základních rysů, ve kterých se rozcházejí, což je nastíněno v závěrečných kapitolách.

Abstract:

This work deals with the moral theories in the "age of reason", i.e. at the time of the Enlightenment (18th century). There are two antagonistic theories - theory of moral sentiments and the theory of practical reason. The theory of moral sentiments is based on sympathy as a major element in moral decision-making and was developed by empiricist philosophers David Hume and Adam Smith. Contradictory theory of practical reason by rationalist Immanuel Kant is ethic of obligations and claims that our actions should be guided by reason, which determines the good will of all rational beings. The reader will be, besides other things, briefly acquainted with the lives of the philosophers, but emphasis is put on the explanation of key concepts and their insertion into the broader context of the ethical systems. For example, we learn the role of usefulness according to Hume, benevolence, gratitude and resentment according to Smith and what Kant meant by his legendary categorical imperative. However, the aim is comparison of the two moral systems and identification of the essential features in which they differ, which is outlined in the final chapters.
