Appearance-independent ROPOT question definition and format conversion in IS MU

Abstract:

The work is solved in the context of e-learning in IS MU (Information System of Masaryk University). In the IS MU are for knowledge testing, admission management or just simple practicing are to a large extent used ROPOTs (Revision, Opinion Poll and Testing). These ROPOTs use different types of questions defined by the easy-to-understand QDEF text format. However, the latter was developed based on requirements that did not anticipate the needs of a modern learning system. In recent years, the shortcomings of this format have become apparent, mainly the bundling of the essence of the question with its visual representation and problems with extensibility. In this paper, we propose a data definition of questions that is based on the logical essence of the question. Thus, we will separate the definition of a question from the its external appearance and we will gain the possibility to define different appearances and external structures that it can take on. We then propose and implement an interface for working with questions in this format. While designing the solution we focus on sustainability and easy extensibility of functionality. We then compare the proposed format with the standard SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) and describe conceptual differences.

Abstract:

Práca je riešená v kontexte e-learningu IS MU (Informačný systém Masarykovej univerzity). V IS MU sú pre testovanie znalostí, prijímacie riadenia alebo iba jednoduché precvičovanie vo veľkej miere využívané odpovedníky. Tieto odpovedníky využívajú rôzne typy otázok definované ľahko zrozumiteľným textovým formátom QDEF. Ten však vznikol na základe požiadaviek, ktoré neočakávali potreby moderného výukového systému. V uplynulých rokoch sa začali prejavovať nedostatky tohto formátu, prevažne zviazania podstaty otázky s jej vzhľadovou reprezentáciou a problémy s rozšíriteľnosťou. V tejto práci navrhneme dátovú definíciu otázok, ktorá je založená na logickej podstate otázky. Oddelíme tak definíciu otázky od jej vonkajšieho vzhľadu a získame možnosť definovať rôzne vzhľady a vonkajšie štruktúry, ktoré môže nadobúdať. Následne navrhneme a implementujeme rozhranie pre prácu s otázkami v tomto formáte. Pri návrhu kladieme dôraz na udržateľnosť a jednoduchú rozšíriteľnosť funkcionality. Navrhnutý formát následne porovnáme so štandardom SCORM (Shareable Content Object Reference Model) a popíšeme koncepčné rozdiely.
