Experiencing the climate crisis from the perspective of post-apocalyptic environmentalism among climate activists

Abstract:

Current thesis deals with the experience of the climate crisis among climate activists from the perspective of post-apocalyptic environmen-talism. The aim of the work was to understand the experience of the climate crisis regarding the feelings of the coming or present apoca-lypse. Interviews with climate activists were analyzed using Interpre-tive Phenomenological Analysis. In the interviews, we identified 7 main themes: The crisis is here, but the apocalypse is not a good word; Fear of the future; We live in an absurd system; Adaptation to the crisis; The need to engage; Community life; Motivation. Although several post-apocalyptic characteristics emerged in how activists experienced the climate crisis, they were not present in all themes. The approach of climate activists is still largely apocalyptic, believing that the worst ef-fects of the crisis may still be prevented.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá prežívaním klimatickej krízy u klimatických aktivistov z perspektívy postapokalyptického environmentalizmu. Cieľom práce bolo porozumieť prežívaniu klimatickej krízy vzhľadom na pocity prichádzajúcej, alebo prítomnej apokalypsy. Rozhovory s klimatickými aktivistami boli analyzované pomocou interpretatívnej fenomenologickej analýzy. V rozhovoroch sme identifikovali 7 hlavných tém: kríza je tu, ale apokalypsa nie je dobré slovo; strach z budúcnosti; žijeme v nezmyselnom systéme; adaptácia na krízu; potreba angažovať sa; život v komunite; motivácia. Hoci sa v prežívaní krízy objavili viaceré postapokalyptické charakteristiky, neboli prítomné vo všetkých témach. Prístup klimatických aktivistov je stále z veľkej časti apokalyptický, pretože veria, že najhoršie dopady krízy môžu byť ešte zvrátené.
