Flight activity of bat community in various types of forest habitats

Abstract:

Metodou automatického monitoringu echolokačních signálů byla sledována úroveň letové aktivity společenstva netopýrů v 10 různých lesních porostech nacházejících se na území Moravy. Cílem tohoto výzkumu bylo zhodnotit rozdíly v biotopové preferenci a sezónní a noční změny letové aktivity netopýrů ve vegetačním období od května do srpna 2005 s použitím bat-detektorů. Hodnocen byl i vliv klimatických podmínek a hlavních krajinných prvků zjištěných pomocí metod GIS. Aktivita byla nahrávána v prvních dvou čtvrtinách noci na 3 vybraných stacionárních stanovištích (otevřený, polouzavřený a uzavřený biotop) na každé lokalitě. Zkoumané období bylo rozděleno na 3 části letní sezóny s ohledem na reprodukci netopýrů, tj. na periodu gravidity, laktace a postlaktace. Zkoumané lesy byly vzhledem k velkým rozdílům v úrovni aktivity rozděleny na lesy horské (nad 700 m.n.m.) s téměř nulovým výskytem netopýrů, a nížinné (do 300 m.n.m.), ve kterých byla aktivita podle očekávání relativně vysoká. Nejvyšší aktivita netopýrů byla zaznamenána v lužním lese v lokalitě Křivé jezero, naopak horskou smrčinu Pradědu netopýři využívali jen sporadicky. Z hlediska časové dynamiky byla v obou typech lesů zaznamenána nejvyšší aktivita na začátku noci, tzn. v první čtvrtině a během druhé čtvrtiny poklesla. V průběhu sezóny byla aktivita v nížinných oblastech nejvyšší v prvním období (gravidita), ve druhém poklesla a nejnižší byla v období postlaktace. V horských lesích byla aktivita ve všech třech obdobích velmi podobná, nejnižší byla v období gravidity. Hlavní klimatickou proměnnou, která pozitivně korelovala s aktivitou, byla teplota vzduchu. Dále se projevila silná negativní korelace aktivity s faktory nadmořské výšky a vzdálenosti k intravilánu, které se nejvíce podílely na charakterizaci skupiny horských lesů. V červnu roku 2007 byl výzkum doplněn o porovnání letové aktivity netopýrů podle gradientu nadmořských výšek v masívu Lysé hory (jedna z původních lokalit). Výzkum probíhal v rozmezí 6 pásem nadmořských výšek od 500 do 1100 m.n.m. Ačkoli aktivita netopýrů zde byla celkově nízká, nejvyšší úroveň jsme zaznamenali v pásmu nadmořských výšek od 601 do 700 m.n.m.. Velmi nízká aktivita netopýrů byla zjištěna zejména nad 901 m n.m.. Nicméně také na lokalitách pod 600 m n.m. byla relativní aktivita netopýrů poloviční než na nejpreferovanějších lokalitách.

Abstract:

The method of automatic monitoring of echolocation calls was used to analyse the level of flight activity of bat community in 10 different forest types in Moravia. The aim of this study was to assess the differences of habitat preferences and seasonal and overnight changes in the flight activity of bats. The research was conducted from May till August 2005 using the bat detectors. We evaluated the influence of climatic conditions and the main landscape elements by means of the GIS methods. The flight activity was recorded on three selected stationary stands (open, semi-closed and closed habitats) during the first two quarters of the night. The season was divided into three parts with respect to the reproduction of bats, i. e., pregnancy, lactation and post-lactation. Due to the great differences in the level of activity, forest types were lumped into two groups: mountain (above 700 m) and lowland (below 300 m) forests. The level of activity in mountains was almost zero compared to that in lowlands, where the activity was relatively high as expected. The highest activity of bats was found in the floodplain forest of Křivé jezero. On the contrary, in a mountain spruce forest on the Praděd Mt. bats occured only scarcely. In light of the time dynamic there was recorded the highest activity at the beginning of the night (1st quarter) in both forest types under study. The level of activity decreased during the second quarter of the night. Through the season the highest activity in lowland areas was registered in the first period (pregnancy), it decreased during the second period and was lowest during the post-lactation period. The level of activity was rather stable in mountain forests throughout the whole season, but the lowest activity was observed during pregnancy. Air temperature was the main climatic condition, which was positively correlated with the differences in flight activity of bats. Strong negative correlations were found between the activity and elevation a distance to the urban area. These factors characterized the group of mountain forests. The research was supplied with the comparison of flight activity of bats along an elevational gradient in Lysá hora (one of the 10 primary localities) in June 2007. The research was conducted within the intervals of 6 elevation zones from 500 to 1100 metres above sea level. Although the activity of bats was generally low, the highest level of activity was recorded in elevation from 601 to 700 m. Very low activity of bats was detected mainly above 900 m above sea level. However the relative activity of bats was found to be half-sized in lower elevations (less than 600 m) than in the most preferred localities.
