Book fittings on bindings from the Benedictine Library in Broumov. Development and use on book bindings, conservation and restoration issues.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá prieskumom kovových prvkov na knižných väzbách z fondu benediktínskej knižnice v Broumove. Teoretická časť sa v úvode na základe odbornej literatúry venuje doterajším poznatkom o kovoch a kovových prvkoch na knižnej väzbe. Rieši štruktúru a vlastnosti kovových materiálov, čo je nevyhnutný základ pre nasledujúce kapitoly tejto práce. Praktická časť je venovaná typológii knižného kovania, kde práca zhŕňa výsledky podrobného prieskumu kovových prvkov z väzieb benediktínskej knižnice od gotiky až do pol. 20. storočia. Ďalšia časť práce sa venuje problematike konzervovania a reštaurovania knižného kovania. Na základe prieskumu kláštornej knižnice boli vyhotovené modelové vzorky, ktoré simulovali poškodenie kovových prvkov. Na týchto modelových vzorkách boli testované jednotlivé konzervačné a reštaurátorské zásahy. Súčasťou každej kapitoly je obrazová alebo fotografická dokumentácia.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the research of book fittings on bindings from the Benedictine Library in Broumov. The theoretical part is based (in the introduction) on the literature which handles with metals and metallic elements (book fittings) on book binding. This part is focused on the structure and characteristics of metallic materials, which are the important and necessary base for the following chapters of this thesis. The practical part is devoted to typology of book fittings, here are summarized results of a detailed survey of metal elements on bookbindings from the gothic to the mid-20th century stored in Benedictine library. Another part of the thesis deals with restoration and conservation of book fittings. Based on a survey of the monastic library, model samples were prepared to simulate the damage on metallic elements. Conservation interventions were tested on these model samples. Each chapter contains also the photo documentation.
