Reduction Strategies in Subtitling: A Study of Czech and English Subtitles for Animated Movies

Abstract:

Předkládaná práce se zabývá redukčními strategiemi při titulkování animovaných filmů, tedy při překladu pro specifické publikum. Ačkoliv je audiovizuální překlad v poslední době velmi populární a poměrně zkoumaný, jen málo studií porovnává výsledky ze dvou jazyků. Tato práce analyzuje české i anglické titulky a porovnává využití redukčních strategií v obou jazycích. Také si klade za cíl revidovat existující kategorizaci redukčních strategií autorů Díaz Cintas a Remael (2014) vzhledem k potřebám českého jazyka.

Abstract:

The present work deals with reduction strategies in subtitling of animated movies, i.e. in translation for specific audiences. Although audiovisual translation lately is very popular and quite researched, only a few studies compare results from two languages. This paper analyses both Czech subtitles and English captions and compares the use of reduction strategies in both languages. It also aims to revise the existing categorization of reduction strategies by Díaz Cintas and Remael (2014) in light of the needs of the Czech language.
