The Characters of Women in Caribbean Literature

Abstract:

Cílem mé práce je zkoumat ženské postavy v karibské literatuře, a to konkrétně jejich hledání identity a vztahy mezi matkou a dítětem. Primární zdroje, s nimiž se v této práci zaobírám, jsou Abeng Michelle Cliffové, Christopher Geoffreyho Draytona, Crick Crack, Monkey od Merle Hodge, Season of Adventure George Lamminga a Wide Sargasso Sea Jean Rhysové. V úvodu se krátce věnuji karibské historii a literatuře a všeobecnému zachycení ženských hrdinek v ní a také shnutí obsahu daných děl. Část věnující se hledání identity mimo jiné objasňuje koncept identity a zužuje jej na etnicitu jakožto výsledek působení jazyka a školství. Poté se zaměřuje na zvolená díla. Druhá část se věnuje vztahům mezi matkou a dítětem a případně i chůvou, která do tohoto vztahu v prostředí Karibiku často vstupuje. Mimo to je zde také zmínka o psychologických a sociologických přístupech k tomutu fenoménu. Závěr pak srovnává zachycení těchto dvou podtémat v daných dílech.

Abstract:

The aim of my thesis is to examine the characters of women in Caribbean literature. I narrowed my research down to their search for identity and mother-child relationships. The primary literature I dealt with is Michelle Cliff’s Abeng; Geoffrey Drayton’s Christopher; Merle Hodge’s Crick Crack, Monkey; George Lamming’s Season of Adventure; and Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea. The introduction concerns with a brief history of the Caribbean and its literature, the characterization of women and their depiction in fiction, and a brief summary of individual works. The part devoted to a search for identity explains among others the concept of identity confining it to ethnicity as the result of the language and schooling, and then concentrates on chosen works. The second part focused on mother-child and ‘mother-nanny-child’ relationships mentions both psychological and sociological approaches towards this phenomenon, and then traces their depiction in the novels. In conclusion, all the works are compared from the point of view of the two themes.
