How to analyse digital poetry

Abstract:

The object of this master diploma thesis is digital poetry and options of its possible analysis. In the first part, there is a describtion of historical and literal tendencies, which led to formation of digital poetry and a precise specification of notion digital poetry. The second part is methodological and focuses on detailed describtion of three types of methodologies: methodologies concerning with materiality of the art work, intermedial semiotics and digital hermeneutics. Methodologies concerning the materiality of art work are: hypertext theory of George Landow and Jay Bolter, cybertext theory of Espen Aarseth and theory of technotext from Katherine Hayles. Intermedial semiotics is approached through terminology of Umberto Eco. Digital hermeneutics refers to analytic methods of Richard Elliot Parent, but it is based on traditional approach of Hans-Georg Gadamer. Three different art works of digital poetry are being analysed by mentioned analysis. On the base of these analysis, the work specifies useful concepts, pros and cons of particular methodologiess and the most proper approaches for works with different element prevailing – visual, textual or interactive. The aim of this work is to map the area of methodological approaches to art works of digital poetry and to evaluate the most useful approaches for a theoretic of new media.

Abstract:

Objektom skúmania tejto magisterskej diplomovej práce je digitálna poézia a možnosti jej analýzy. V prvej časti práca približuje historické literárne tendencie, ktoré viedli k formovaniu digitálnej poézie a vymedzuje pole záujmu. V druhej, metodologickej časti je dôraz kladený na detailný popis troch typov metodológií skúmania digitálnej poézie: metodológie zaoberajúce sa materialitou diela, intermediálna semiotika a digitálna hermeneutika. Ako metodológie zaoberajúce sa materialitou diela sú vymedzené: hypertextová teória Georgea Landowa a Jaya Boltera, kybertextová teória Espena Aarsetha a teória technotextu od Katherine Hayles. Intermediálna semiotika je vymedzená najmä prostredníctvom terminológie a prístupu Umberta Eca. Digitálna hermeneutika sa odvoláva na analytické metódy čítania Richarda Elliota Parenta, ale je založená aj na tradičnom prístupe Hansa-Georga Gadamera. Prostredníctvom týchto metodológií sú v tretej časti práce analyzované tri diela digitálnej poézie. Na základe vypracovaných analýz práca poukazuje na užitočné koncepty, výhody a nevýhody jednotlivých prístupov a najvhodnejšie prístupy k dielam s prevládajúcou vizuálnou, textovou alebo interaktívnou zložkou. Cieľom práce je zmapovať pole metodologických prístupov k dielam digitálnej poézie a vyhodnotiť najužitočnejšie prístupy pre teoretika nových médií.
