The media presentation of Warsaw pact invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968-1969 in czech newspaper Rudé právo

Abstract:

The diploma thesis is focused on reconstruction of media presentation of invasion in august 1968, and how this presentation was created in the most read Czech newspaper Rudé právo, the main press authority of Communist party of Czechoslovakia (KSČ). The aim of the thesis was to explore the changes in the presentation that appeared in four defined periods: immediately after the invasion, after the summit in Moscow, during the era of consolidation and „normalization“, and after self-burnig of Jan Palach and his death. The thesis is based on Ruth Wodak’s discourse-historical approach and it’s using Gee’s method of discourse analysis. This paper is keen on the strategies used by authors of analyzed articles to set their ideology as dominant one. The thesis is divided into three parts: in theoretical one, basic theoretical concepts are briefly presented, in historical part, the invasion is framed into the social and political situation, and in the third part dedicated to presentation of research results, the review of discourse models, their partial discourses and ideological groups, that constructed them are presented. The thesis offers a detail view on the way how political elites of restrained reformists succeeded to set and hold their ideology as dominant one and to suppress the others.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa sústreďuje na rekonštrukciu mediálneho obrazu intervencie z augusta 1968, tak ako bol vytváraný v najčítanejšom českom denníku Rudé právo, ústrednom tlačovom orgáne Komunistickej strany Československa (KSČ). Práca si kládla za cieľ odhaliť zmeny v tomto zobrazení, ktoré prebiehali v štyroch vymedzených obdobiach: bezprostredne po intervencii, po rokovaniach v Moskve, v priebehu konsolidácie a normalizácie a po upálení sa Jana Palacha. Použitou metodológiou práce bol diskurzívno-historický prístup podľa Ruth Wodakovej s využitím metódy diskurzívnej analýzy podľa Jamesa P. Geeho. Práca sa tiež zaoberá stratégiami, ktoré autori skúmaných článkov používali na nastolenie svojej ideológie, ako tej dominantnej. Práca je rozdelená do troch častí: v teoretickej časti vymedzuje základné koncepty, v historickej časti práca ukotvuje intervenciu do spoločensko-politického rámca, a vo výskumnej časti práca ponúka prehľad využívaných diskurzívnych modelov, ich parciálnych diskurzov, ako aj ideologických skupín, ktoré ich podporovali. Práca prináša detailný pohľad na to, ako mocenská politická elita umiernených radikálov dokázala obhájiť svoju ideológiu ako dominantnú a potlačiť tie ostatné.
