Reasons for high inflation in the Czech Republic in 2021-2023

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na nadměrně vysokou dynamiku cenové hladiny posledních let v České republice. Cílem práce je tak identifikovat, definovat a interpretovat příčiny, jež způsobily výrazný růst cenové hladiny, a určit, zda se jednalo o inflaci poptávkovou či nabídkovou. Teoretická část se věnuje základní kategorizaci, způsobům měření, klíčovým proinflačním faktorům a možnostem, kterými lze omezit vysoký růst inflace. V praktické části jsou pak rozčleněny a popsány konkrétní skutečnosti a jejich vliv na vývoj inflace. Mezi poptávkové faktory plynoucí z české ekonomiky tento text řadí nucené úspory spotřebitelů a štědrou fiskální politiku v období pandemické krize. Z nabídkové strany pak inflační tlaky vytvářel zejména růst cen komodit, zvyšování nominálních mezd (oproti nižšímu růstu produktivity) a „hamižnost“ prodejců v post pandemickém období.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis focuses on the excessively high dynamics of the price level in the Czech Republic in recent years. The aim of the thesis is to identify, define and interpret the causes that have led to the significant increase in the price level and to determine whether it was demand or supply inflation. The theoretical part deals with the basic categorisation, methods of measurement, key inflationary factors and options that can be used to curb high inflation. The practical part then breaks down and describes specific facts and their impact on inflation. Among the demand-side factors emanating from the Czech economy, this text includes forced consumer savings and generous fiscal policy during the pandemic crisis. On the supply side, inflationary pressures were generated mainly by rising commodity prices, rising nominal wages (against lower productivity growth) and the "greed" of retailers in the post-pandemic period.
