Hoaxy sa na rozdiel od vírov a trojských koní šíria zdieľaním samotnými užívateľmi. Šírenie hoaxov sa už dnes dá nazvať celosvetovým problémom. Sila hoaxov narástla do takej miery, že sú to práve hoaxy, ktoré rozhodujú o výsledkoch volieb, menia diskurz verejnej mienky a počas posledných dvoch rokov sme mohli zaznamenať nárast výskytu hoaxov súvisiacich s priamym ohrozením zdravia ľudí.
