Comparison of woodland malacofauna between Central Europe and the Southern Urals in a context of Holocene succession

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na ekologické nároky měkkýšů, holocenní sukcesi středoevropské lesní malakofauny a srovnání malakocenóz současných lesů střední Evropy s lesy Jižního Uralu, kde byla nalezena analogie lesů předpokládaných ve střední Evropě během staršího a středního holocénu. Rešeršní část se věnuje proměnným prostředí, které ovlivňují suchozemské měkkýše, holocenní dynamice středoevropské přírody a malakofauny, využití měkkýšů při paleoekologických rekonstrukcích a jihouralské současné analogii lesů střední Evropy ve starém a středním holocénu. Při vlastním výzkumu byla v praktické části práce srovnána druhová diverzita a variabilita druhového složení společenstev plžů ve čtyřech typech lesů (borech, březinách, doubravách a suťových lesích) na území České republiky, které odpovídají předpokládané sukcesi lesní vegetace ve starším a středním holocénu. Byl testován vliv zjišťovaných faktorů prostředí na variabilitu druhové bohatosti a skladby plžů. Data z České republiky byla porovnána s daty získanými na Jižním Uralu a byla kvantifikována míra vlivu biogeografických a environmentálních faktorů na variabilitu druhových dat plžů. Vzorky byly odebrány celkově na 50 lokalitách v borech, březinách, doubravách a suťových lesích na území České republiky. Malakocenózy byly zkoumány pomocí odběrů hrabanky a ručního sběru na ploše o rozměrech 10x10 m. Na této definované ploše byl zapisován vegetační snímek, odebírány vzorky biomasy bylin, povrchové vrstvy půdy a půdy z hloubky 10 cm. Dále byly měřeny a zaznamenávány další charakteristiky stanoviště (např. nadmořská výška, sklon a orientace svahu). Data z Jižního Uralu pocházela z 37 lokalit všech čtyř zkoumaných typů lesů. Získaná data byla vyhodnocena a analyzována v programech Microsoft Office Excel 2007, STATISTICA 12 a R 3.3.1. Celkem bylo nalezeno 6728 jedinců patřících k 76 druhům plžů. Nejméně druhů i jedinců bylo nalezeno v borech a nejvíce v suťových lesích. Obsah vápníku v bylinné biomase se ukázal být faktorem s nejvýznamnějším vlivem na variabilitu počtu druhů, který byl důležitější než vliv obsahu vápníku v povrchové a spodní vrstvě půdy. Jako další faktory s velmi významným vlivem na diverzitu malakocenóz byly identifikovány typ lesa a Ellenbergovy hodnoty pro vlhkost. Je možné konstatovat, že studované lokality dobře odrážejí holocenní sukcesi středoevropské lesní malakofauny. V lesích Jižního Uralu bylo nalezeno méně druhů plžů než v lesích stejného typu na území České republiky a zdá se, že nízká druhová diverzita a druhové složení společenstev plžů Jižního Uralu jsou ovlivněny jak biogeografickými, tak environmentálními faktory a velkou roli hrají faktory klimatické. Rozdíly v druhovém složení malakofaun obou studovaných regionů podporují hypotézu současné analogie staršího a středního holocénu střední Evropy nalezené na Jižním Uralu.

Abstract:

This study deals with the ecological requirements of land snails, the Holocene succession of Central European woodland malacofauna and the comparison of woodland malacofauna in present Central Europe and in the Southern Urals, where a modern analogy of Early and Middle Holocene forests of Central Europe has been documented. The first part of the study, which is a review of the literature, summarizes the environmental factors influencing land snails, the Holocene dynamics of Central European environment and snail assemblages, the use of mollusc fossils in palaeoecological reconstructions, and the modern analogue of the Early and Middle Holocene forests of Central Europe. In the second, experimental, part of the study species richness and the variability of the species composition were compared within four forest types in the Czech Republic (pine forests, birch forests, oak forests and talus forests), which resemble the succession of forest vegetation in the Early and Middle Holocene. The effect of the measured environmental factors on the variation in species richness and composition was tested. The data from the studied sites in the Czech Republic were compared with the data obtained in the forests of the Southern Urals and proportional effect of biogeographic and environmental factors on the variation in species composition was quantified. Sampling was carried out at 50 woodland sites in all four forest types situated in the Czech Republic. Snail assemblages were studied by litter sampling and searching by eye within a defined quadrat of 10x10 m. The vegetation was studied in detail at this plot and samples of herb biomass and topsoil and soil from the depth of 10 cm were sampled. Moreover, another variables were measured and recorded (e.g. elevation, aspect and slope). The data from the Southern Urals came from 37 sites in all four forest types. The obtained data were evaluated and analysed using Microsoft Office Excel 2007, STATISTICA 12, and R 3.3.1. In total, 6728 individuals belonging to 76 land snail species were recorded. The lowest number of species and individuals was found in pine forests. On the contrary, the species and individuals richness was the highest in the talus forests with elm, maple and lime trees. Calcium content in herb biomass was determined as a factor with a most significant effect on the data variability. This variable was more important than calcium content in topsoil and soil from the depth of 10 cm. The type of forest and Ellenberg’s indicator values for moisture were identified as another factors highly significantly influencing mollusc diversity. It is possible to conclude that the main compositional gradient in the studied assemblages reflected the Holocene succession of forest vegetation. In Southern Urals forests lower number of species was recorded than in the same forest types in the Czech Republic. It seems that the low species diversity and specific mollusc species composition in the Southern Urals are influenced by both biogeographical and environmental factors, with climatic factors playing an important role. The differences between snail species composition in the Czech Republic and in the Southern Urals support the hypothesis of Central European Early and Middle Holocene forests reported from the Southern Urals.
