Language skills development in ELT classes via the use of children's literature in English

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá rozvojem jazykových dovedností v hodinách anglického jazyka prostřednictvím dětské anglicky psané literatury. Hlavním cílem této práce je vytvořit přehled teoretických poznatků o využití dětské anglicky psané literatury ve výuce anglického jazyka pro různé věkové kategorie, a to zvláště pro rozvoj jazykových dovedností. Na základě těchto poznatků a dat z výzkumu mezi učiteli jsou vytvořeny pracovní listy pro hodiny anglického jazyka využívající dětskou anglicky psanou literaturu v předškolním vzdělávání a v prvním a druhém období 1. stupně ZŠ. Teoretická část charakterizuje žáky předškolního a mladšího školního věku a předkládá zásady pro jejich výuku. Definuje dětskou anglicky psanou literaturu a seznamuje čtenáře s jednotlivými jazykovými dovednostmi a jak je skrze dětskou anglicky psanou literaturu ve výuce anglického jazyka u těchto věkových skupin rozvíjet. V rámci praktické části je provedeno dotazníkové šetření mezi učiteli týkající se využívání dětské anglicky psané literatury za účelem rozvíjení jazykových dovedností žáků. V této části práce jsou představeny pracovní listy, které jsou odučeny v praxi skrze přiložené plány hodin. Následně je práce s dětskou anglicky psanou literaturou reflektována.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis studies the development of language skills in English language classes through children's literature written in English. The main goal of the thesis is to create an overview of theoretical knowledge about the use of children's literature written in English in the teaching of the English language for different age categories, especially for the development of language skills. Based on these findings and data from research among teachers, worksheets for English lessons using children's English-written literature in preschool education and primary education are created. In the theoretical part pupils of preschool and younger school age are characterized and the principles for their teaching are presented. Moreover, the children's literature written in English is defined. This section also introduces the reader to individual language skills and how to develop them through children's literature written in English in teaching English to these age groups. In the second part of the thesis a questionnaire survey is conducted among teachers regarding the use of children's literature written in English for the purpose of developing students' language skills. In addition, the worksheets, which are included in the attached lesson plans, are presented. These lessons plans were realised in a teaching practise. Subsequently, the findings are reflected.
