Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je snahou o rozšíření a prohloubení výzkumu konceptuálních metafor v populárněvědeckém diskurzu zabývajícím se lidským mozkem. Metodologicky staví na studii Juliany Goschler (2007), která se věnuje analýze konceptuálních metafor v německy psaném populárněvědeckém textu. V diplomové práci se rozebírá korpus textového a obrazového materiálu zahrnující celkem 50 anglicky psaných online článků věnujících se novým objevům v neurovědě. Cílem práce je načrtnout typologii konceptuálních metafor objevujících se v této reprezentativní vzorce daného diskurzu a zároveň poskytnout kriticko-analytický náhled na jejich užívaní z hlediska (1) procesů konstrukce významu, které je utvářejí, jako i z hlediska (2) vědecko-teoretických a filozofických problémů, které z konzistentního užívaní těchto metafor vyplývají. Klíčovým prvkem této diskuze je otázka, jak metaforické konceptualizace v populárněvědeckém diskurzu strukturují naše metafyzické intuice o povaze a vymezení subjektivity. Po stručném úvodu do problematiky v první sekci se následující sekce zabývá výkladem použité metody a odkazuje na původ primárních zdrojů. Třetí sekce přibližuje teoretické pozadí studie: vysvětluje teorii konceptuálních metafor (Conceptual Metaphor Theory – CMT) vytvořenou Georgem Lakoffem a Markem Johnsonem a umísťuje ji do rámce teorie vtělené kognice (embodied congition), jejíž je nedílnou součástí. Čtvrtá a hlavní sekce diplomové práce je věnovaná představení a diskuzi samotných výsledků analýzy. V této sekci načrtnu typologii konceptuálních metafor identifikovaných v studovaných textech. Jednotlivé typy metafor jsou doprovázeny vybranými příklady z korpusu. Tyto výsledky jsou následně interpretovány vzhledem k výše zmíněním otázkám. V závěru sekce taktéž přibližuju metafory, které se vážou specificky k našemu pojmu paměti. Práce je nakonec uzavřena stručnou diskuzi závěrů, shrnutím a návrhem pro další směrovaní výzkumu.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis reproduces and expands upon Goschler’s (2007) research on conceptual metaphor in German popular-scientific discourse concerned with human brains. My work studies a corpus of 50 popular-scientific articles originally written in English and published online. These articles are representative of the contemporary science journalism reporting the latest developments in neuroscience to the general public within the English speaking online community. I compare and discuss my results with Goschler’s, and eventually draw a different categorization of identified conceptual metaphors present in the text. The observed types of metaphorical conceptualizations are then discussed in their relationship to theoretical issues they may produce. In this discussion, I focus mainly on the topic of how metaphorical language surrounding popular-scientific notions of brain and psychological phenomena structures our intuitive metaphysical understanding of selfhood, which is a key component of any ethics. After introducing the topic in the first section, I briefly describe the method of conducting the research, and reference my primary sources. Section three delves into the necessary theoretical background. It explains Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT) and positions it within the framework of embodied cognition – an approach of which CMT is a crucial constitutive part. The fourth and main section of the thesis demonstrates and discusses my results: in this section I draw a typology of conceptual metaphors identified in the text and accompany it with specific examples. These examples are discussed in terms of (1) the meaning-construction processes they result from, and (2) the philosophical problems their conceptual structuring entails. The section additionally zooms in onto the conceptual metaphors informing our notion of memory. In the last section I summarize the work, draw conclusions about the discussed material and suggest further steps to be taken in this perspective line of inquiry.
