The effect of unemployment rate and the average wage on criminality in the Czech Republic between 2005 and 2018

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem míry nezaměstnanosti a výše průměrné mzdy na kriminalitu, zejména pak na počet vloupání do bytů a rodinných domů v České republice mezi lety 2005 a 2018. V práci jsou testovány dvě základní hypotézy postavené na základě ekonomické analýzy kriminality G. Beckera, že vyšší míra nezaměstnanosti a vyšší průměrná mzda vedou k vyššímu počtu vloupání. Hypotézy jsou testovány na panelových datech z ČSÚ v rámci 14 krajů ČR za použití metody fixních efektů. Bylo prokázáno, že zvýšení obecné míry nezaměstnanosti o 1 procentní bod v průměru zvýší počet vloupání v daném kraji o 3–6 % dle specifikace modelu, čímž byla hypotéza o pozitivní korelaci mezi mírou nezaměstnanosti a počtem vloupání potvrzena. Druhá hypotéza o pozitivní korelaci mezi průměrnou mzdou a počtem vloupání nemůže být jednoznačně potvrzena ani zamítnuta. Zatímco zvýšení průměrné reálné mzdy o 1 000 Kč sníží v témže roce počet vloupání o 17–20 %, stejné zvýšení průměrného příjmu v předchozím roce způsobí nárůst počtu vloupání o 13–16 % nyní. Efekt je tedy nejednoznačný.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the influence of the unemployment rate and the average wage on crime, especially on the number of burglaries in apartments and houses in the Czech Republic between 2005 and 2018. The thesis tests two basic hypotheses based on G. Becker's economic analysis of crime, that a higher unemployment rate and a higher average wage lead to a higher number of burglaries. The hypotheses are tested on panel data from the Czech Statistical Office within 14 regions of the Czech Republic using the fixed effects method. It has been proven that increasing the general unemployment rate by 1 percentage point will, on average, increase the number of burglaries in a given region by 3–6% according to the model specification, thus confirming the hypothesis of a positive correlation between the unemployment rate and the number of burglaries. The second hypothesis of a positive correlation between the average wage and the number of burglaries cannot be clearly confirmed nor rejected. While an increase in the average real wage by CZK 1,000 reduces the number of burglaries by 17–20% in the same year, the same increase in the average income in the previous year causes an increase in the number of burglaries by 13–16% now. The effect is therefore ambiguous.
